I've had a look at the forecast for saturday, I reckon it's looking pretty average.
Anyone from down Torquay way got any feelings on how they reckon conditions are looking?
If ther isn't much of a wave at cosy corner/pt danger is there a back up spot or is it more likely to be postponed??

Don't know about relocation options on the day but Surfing Victoria says on their website that they will reschedule to a date in May if conditions are not suitable for a state championship and nationals selection.

Gut feeling is that they will run it. Surfed today at the backbeach while the young bloke did a clinic with Adam Robbo. Lots of fun and super contestable. Can only imagine Juc would have been similar. Supposed to be somewhat bigger on Saturday although a bit windyer. If its stuck at Danger we are rooted!!

No nothing like that. However my neck of the woods is a bit of a swell magnet ie more like Portsea than Torquay and also fairly close to offshore on an Easterly. Before stand up I would have been quite happy to surf today on a shorty.

I live at Jan Juc-looks to me like it'll be a couple of feet-similar to today which is qute nice-although the winds are predicted to be light ESE-not perfect but we all surf with the seabreeze anyway.
If the Surf conditions aren't up to State Title conditions-the event will become and expression session and the Titles will be held at a later date in conjunction with the Longboard titles.
With the distance paddle- If the winds are stronger than predicted-Surfing Vic have the option to run the event with the wind, starting East of Torquay and paddle back to Cosy Corner as opposed to paddling against the wind starting at Bells Beach.
Pretty Sure a call will be made later today. Looks like fun with either scenerio.

Yesterday's downwinder on the bay was awesome! Best run I've had since Maui! There may not be any swell down here, but the runners just link together sooo easily. Didn't even have to paddle some of the time, just lean on the rail to move from one bump to the next!
Pity today's race isn't in the bay!

I agree.. but without the strong wind like yesterday it would be just a flat water paddle..

We had a great down-winder on the bay in the morning with the northerly..

It's looing like a 10 knot south easterly for todays race.. Oops it's just swung even more east..

You might see everyone paddle past on the live surf cam here..

Live Results from Pt Danger via Telstra iPhone!!

Ali Cat cleaned up the Womens Race Division on my 17!!
Cam nailed the Quinella with winning both Open Mens and 12'6 Mens.
Ali Cat also won Womens 12'6 with the men, I believe.
I figure Kristi won Girls Division, if they award it.

Bells paddles was cancelled, and we did laps in the partial protection of Cosy Corner Pt Danger.

Cam Lampard is looking strong in the Over 35 Surf SUP, women are hitting the water now, followed with Open Men.

Great Day so far!

But wait for Rich / Session to post full results, with times and boards. It was recorded.

But probably no official distance readings...?? Oh, maybe Ali Cat has a record of distance via her GPS watch !?

Surf was a bust!! Such a bummer for the likes of Scott, Dan and others who had travelled big miles to be there. Good to catch up with some Breezers in the flesh though. Hope you all get some smokers before you head back, but it doesnt look good. Well done to the organisers for making the best out of a dud hand.

Just pipped is right - it was a photo finish with them both recording the same time to the second. Incredible race with Cam powering away on two stretches of the triangular course but Dave reeling him in each lap on the waves. They hit the beach together and Dave made a run for the line slightly ahead before Cam took a few big strides to get his neck in front.

Yeah I was watching from the hill with Ross, great view and I must say it was the most exciting finish to
a distance race ever! Possibly the only exciting distance race ever?

They are much more fun from the carpark (IMO) .

Props to Max wells and Surfing Vic for putting the event together and the Bass straight Club for helping
out and Phil's family for running the BBQ. Great job!

Lets hope we get better waves for the next episode.

Hi guys, the course was just under a kilometer per lap, with the last leg a fraction shorter. I forgot to stop the gps at the end of each race, but It looks like the womens race was about 1.85km and the mens 12'6 race was 2.8km, so the open mens would have been about the same.

Hi All ,

Sorry for the delay on all the race times they have been locked away at Surfing Vic house over the weekend but will chase this up today .

Thanks everyone for travelling to Torquay for the event and hope we score better conditions next year.

Well done to all staff at Surfing Victoria !!

Report from Liam at Surfing Vic.........

Challenging conditions fail to restrict performance at the ROLA Victorian SUP titles supported by VB.

(Pt. Danger, Vic – Saturday 22nd January 2011): Less that ideal conditions on the Surfcoast have failed to limit performance at the inagural ROLA Victorian SUP titles at Pt. Danger, Torquay.

Event Director Max Wells, deemed the conditions unsuitable to run the Open Men's Victorian Title and sent the competitors out in an “expression session” style format. This format encourages the surfers to take risks and surf without restraint and this resulted in some excellent action for the crowd lining the Pt. Danger cliffs.

The open men's expression session was a stellar affair, with several interstate competitors adding some incredible depth to the lineup. Barwon Head's Matt Lumley outclassed field, showing why he is one of the most respected SUP surfers in Australia and took victory. Graeme Briggs performed solidly to finish second with Will Cousins, Cam Lamperd and Matt Tackle taking 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively.

Lumley was more than pleased with his win, “Today is the start of a bigger movement in Victorian surfing. It is great to see such a strong turn out of SUP surfers and I am really looking forward to seeing this event develop in years to come.”

“I am still battling complications from my punctured lung and feel good to have taken victory today”.

Cameron Lamperd backed up his 4th position in the open men's with an impressive win in the over 35 men expression session. Lamperd locked in a two-wave total of 15.5 (out of a possible 20) to defeat Graeme Briggs (11.5), Matt Martin (10.5) and Phil Trigger (9.0).

Emma Webb dominated the women's division, locking in the two highest wave scores of the day, and 8.5 and 9.5 (out of a possible 10). Second was Linda Lim, with Alison Fullagar in 3rd and Kristiana Page finishing 4th.

Another large component of the day was the men's and women's distance races. The intended course for the distance races was from Bells Beach to Cosy Corner, allowing the competitors a rare opportunity to travel across the scenic coastline. However the strong southerly wind forced event organizers to shift the race course to within the protected Cosy Corner bay.

The open men's distance race came down to the wire. With Cam Hosking taking victory in a thrilling sprint finish up the beach from Dave Hunt. Both men finishing in a time of 18 minutes 9 seconds.

Hosking, who rode a “Naish 17”, thanked Dave for challenging him right up until the finish line. “We were side by side the whole race, I am definitely feeling exhausted now!”.

Placing third in the men distance race was Rupert Lancashire (18.59) with Andrew Hocking (19.40) in fourth position.

Hosking continued his run of form also taking out the open mens race for boards under 12 feet 6 inches. Hosking finished in a time of 21.11, ahead of Christian Parsons (22.52) who rode a 12'6 Fanatic.

Queensland's Alison Fullagar owned the womens distance race from start to finish, paddling her “Glide 17” to a time of 15 minutes. Fullagar finished 106 seconds ahead of second placed Lisa Lim.

The Victorian SUP titles and team selection will now be run at a to be confirmed date in May 2011.

IMO.. Same should be done for the flat-water/down-winder distance event .. A short course 3 klm paddle just doesn't seem right to me.

DJ, the race was a Short Course 3km Expression Session . Plus, that is exactly why I would like to see a waiting window for (say) 3 weekends for a Down Wind Race, mobile event. We need 15 knots+, and I'm sure we can set a good 8km+ course somewhere along the Port Phillip Bay Coast.... StKilda to Sorrento coastline caters for a few different wind directions....

There might be errors. Brendan & I are the wrong way around in results. Brendan was on a "14 Glide" not "Wide". Doesn't matter !

I'm not convinced that Bells to Torquay can provide ideal conditions to stage a downwind race - the wind direction and current just doesn't seem conducive. Maybe a no-winder perhaps.

The course that Max and Lummers decided on in Cosy Corner was terrific. Very challenging with 3 different sets of challenges depending on which leg of the triangular course you were on. And it provided a perfect vantage for spectators over the whole course as Cam and Dave really put on a show. That wouldn't have been the case on a point-to-point race - the spectators wouldn't have seen it and there wouldn't have been the constant lead changes each lap. The only thing is it could have gone a bit longer, maybe a couple more laps, although the guys further back in the field would kill me for suggesting that.

Correct PT Woody. It was a great little course considering the conditions on the day. I understand the Bells plan was a "no winder", and as per DJ's little video from the previous Saturday, you can see it is a magic little paddle along there.

PS - DTM Dan, unfortunately you missed out on a solid swell today! Ali can confirm how solid the Bells Bombs were today.
