Any kook can paddle out on a short board

True that.

However I've never seen a shortboard that weighs twenty kilos, nor have I ever witnessed one break a leggy and wipe out an entire surf school full of children.

So frickin true

Are there any techniques that don't involve a gigantic heavy board sweeping in a pendulum motion taking out anyone in a 25 to 30 ft radius behind the paddler trying to dive under the wall of whitewater?

Cool - Maybe an annual culling of future short board riders might be just what we need to keep the numbers down on the peak and from the forum.

SUPs are cool when ya stick a sail in them, otherwise they are just picnic tables

I must say I love going out in overhead stuff on the SUP, but after 4 snapped boards and a lot of frustrating smashings I am sticking to the mal now on most occasions. The best I have seen get out on a SUP in solid stuff is the Goatman, true legend!, probably easy compared to goatboats though, hey Goatman.

Got to admit getting out in the bigger stuff on a SUP can be tricky at times so yeah it is wise to avoid areas where surfers are, but isn't it a good feeling when you make it over an overhead one.

i find if the waves are on the bigger side if you flick your board up at the waves coming you can flick your board over the wave and if it doesn't make it you normally dont get dragged as much, waiting for a lull also works as well but can be a while, i normally try and get as far out when the sets come, normally paddling on my stomach and then paddle like hell after the set, a few different ways, they all mightn't work for you or a combination might

I do similar. Like paddle like a bastard and project your board up the whitewash and into space. So the board does not come back and kill you you need to hit at a bit of an angle. Oh, then pray there ain't another four waves in the set!
