Cant say ive ever made a wave crumble either , that must be a neat trick.

You obviously haven't been surfing long? Doesn't matter whether you have a board or are bodysurfing, someone dropping in to a wave makes it crumble. Look at some pictures or videos of people in the act of taking off and you'll clearly see the wave breaking from them catching it.

Fair enough , but how much does that effect the wave quality for say someone right inside. But your right i havent been surfing for that long and it hasnt been a problem for me so far , i have caught plenty of waves out on the shoulder and i pull out if their is someone inside and ive had no complaints from anyone saying you just wrecked my wave. I would think other surfers would prefer sups to be out on the shoulder letting them ride in the pockett.

If it's a fat mushburger it might actually make a section for the person to bounce off (as long as they're not going to hit the dropper-inner). But in more critical waves it can mean a lip on the head for the person in position. Or for someone who takes off deep, it can (and often is) the difference between making the wave and not making the wave. You calculate how deep you can make it, take off and suddenly someone way out on the shoulder crumbles a whole section that would've otherwise held up and you can't make it around the foam and that's the end. Happens to me all the time. Dropping in on the shoulder then pulling out is already too late - you've already crumbled the wave by dropping in. This happens all the time, people don't give the guy with priority any consideration. The way it should be is that you don't even paddle for a wave if someone else is in priority position. If they blow it (on a set wave), they go to the back of the line. If they blow it again, all bets are off and you can drop in to your heart's content. If you blow two set waves you should probably think hard about paddling in, or to another peak (with your tail between your legs). People dropping in just in case the person inside don't make it sucks. I never paddle for someone else's wave.

E.g. look at this:

An example of the wave crumbling from people catching it, and also an example of extremely bad etiquette. The two dropper-inners should never have paddled for that wave. The guy in position is clearly going to make it (unless he's a monumental kook) and the other two are just rude and deserve a verbal spray. Quite often people do that without even looking inside themselves - no care at all, no manners.

I get that , it would be more critical in steeper Waves , where i surf they are Generally Fat and the shorties at least have no hope of getting way out on the shoulder. Most cases im talking a good 15m out.But i can see at a lot of breaks it would be an issue.

But thanks for the clarification , i hadnt thought of it like that before.

You're probably alright, but keep an eye on the effects of your dropping in. If it causes someone to not make the wave, best not to do it again if you want to keep the peace.

In that photo it's a mushburger wave. I'd almost guarantee the wave wouldn't have broken outside the guy in priority if not for the dropper-inners. And yet because of them the guy in priority will have about a 6-8m section of whitewater to negotiate, made a little more tricky by the guy paddling out/duckdiving and the booger who's going to have to fade around the duckdiver and therefore fade the guy in priority.

By the time the dropper-inners (esp. the booger) pull out, the whole first section of that wave will be wasted for that guy.

I was at the Alley on SUP one day and I accidentally dropped in a guy who ripped. I pulled off immediately and apologised profusely. He said he was spewing I pulled off as I was making the best lip for him to smack. He also said he was worried when I paddled out as you never know what kind of danger you'll be in with most SUP riders.

That arvo we worked as a team he took off inside I took the shoulder, I would switchfoot and sit 3/4 face and watch him do airs, tailslides and belt the crap out of this lip that was forming from the tail of my board. I wish I had a camera for it, it was an amazing experience to ride along and watch it from this close.

Most guys are 'cheating' they can't surf on a normal board and the SUP helps them skip the pain of learning. These guys however will still always be kooks, there arent too many shortcuts to do things truly worth doing.

Maybe the guy on the inside had already stuffed 2 waves up and this was the free for all wave.

F U C K the shoulder i say go sit deep!!! if they have a whinge just fade them till they go in, they'll get the hint. Free ocean in my books i dont give a rats if you think you own it. The only people i have had blow up are KooKy old long boarders and really who cares what they say[}:)][}:)] See you boys in about a week!!!

Yeah, that's possible and the only circumstance in which this situation would be OK.

In our Standart reality by the time that shot was taken wouldn't you be already carving a cut back at them from out wide??
Or at least be speeding thru your bottom turn lookng up at them and doing the dodgem to the face.

Just thinking about what I said about being way out on the shoulder.. and out of the way.

You still need to watch what you doing and not like this long boarder in this vid at the 5.12 mark.. .. How pissed off did that little guy look.

It's a great vid from Tom English and worth watching just for the fun of it.

Great find DJ,now this goes against my believes but that kid was one lucky guy snagging all those waves by himself, and he goes well for a little guy, last time I was over there it was 10 up all up on every wave,I guess that's what happens in peak holiday periods.

Put it this way if your not willing to share over there,go somewhere more remote.

You are cheating!
well i think that their is always going to be tension when people introduce longer watercraft that can catch waves easier.....I have given up on my local break because for the past decade or so it has been over run by mal riders ( most of whom i don,t know and ive lived here forever) Now we have SUPs coming in as well.....So here's the Q what would happen if someone brought in a bigger craft again...even less manouvreable?.....the Mals and SUPs would be spewing....(just like i am now)...say jetskis....hawian canoes...boards with motors.... ripping past them Ha! That is where the issue is....no one on a short board is ever going to say farken yahoo....here comes a herd of mals and SUPs and goatboaters.....love to know how you would feel to be pissed off from your lifelong local by a bunch of loud mouth pricks who have just blown in and have no respect for the fact that they are ****ing someones backyard
