As an enemy they are a perfect fit for surfers. With a 12 foot board and paddle the ****ers can be accused of wave stealing, while overblown claims to waterman lineage leave 'em open to charges of wankerism, and 'surfing as core strength training' just sounds so damn serious.

The SUP's are out of control on the reefs around Flinders in Vic. Every old fool with more money than sense has put their mals into storage because with these new boats, the waves don't have to be any where near braking before they can climb aboard. So now, they can COMPLETELY MONOPOLISE the break and catch every wave, not just every second one. Four guys out at a break and it is stuffed, and they get all high and mighty when the kids drop in on them, GO FIGURE.

From that link, Im sure Legion is here somewhere

Sorry Goaty! But I wouldn't have put it on the Breeze! ( although you probably just beat someone else to it anyways)

Everything that Stu guy writes seems to be aimed at putting someone's nose out of joint. Funny thing is he's usually pretty insightful, pretty spot on and pretty entertaining!

I liked this piece he penned as well, "it's funny cause it's true":

The setting: The carpark of a Mid North Coast breakwall. Last Thursday.

After finishing a session in great three to four feet waves I stand behind my car changing into my clothes. It's still early and there aren't many people around.

A van pulls into the carpark and two fashionably unkempt young fellas get out. They nod and ask me about the surf before walking over the dune to check it themselves. Two minutes later they're back in the carpark getting changed out of their clothes.

The first fella doffs his duds and pulls on a pair of cut-off denim jeans. He teams them with a circa-1970's sleeveless vest and I raise an eyebrow. Accordingly, the second fella also dons a pair of cut-off denim jeans but matches it with a long-sleeve beavertail wetsuit. It's a fair dinkum 1960's scuba-diving number with thick neoprene and chunky chest zip. Both eyebrows raised, I'm plainly staring now.

Boards get removed from the van and on first sight they perfectly match the period surf apparel – a short double-ender with a high aspect ratio fin and a full-figured longboard. Upon closer inspection however, their charity bin surfwear pales against their designer model sticks - one board is a Joel Tudor model Kookbox the other a Takayama. $2000 worth of hardware is sitting on the grass.

Now I understand the argument of young surfers, reared on thrusters, discovering old boards for the first time; how they feel different and can expand the surfing experience. But why spend big bucks on aquatic PT Cruisers while eschewing humble sartorial comforts? Are dank jeans, manky crotch rot and a biting wetsuit rash really necessary to complete the experience?

Is this authenticity or an affectation?

And if it is a lunge at authenticity, then why do the two boards lying on the grass – both throwbacks to the 60's - have legropes attached? If these two fellas were acting in a period drama then those legropes are standing out like a digital watch on the wrist of an 18th century British Earl.

Call me an old curmudgeon, complaining about kids these days. But, ****, at least I don't need a rocking chair and cane to complete the role. Anyway, there is one thing I am thankful for, and that's that the two fellas aren't riding alaias. I'm not yet ready for loin cloths in the line up.

Unfortunately, the kook ratio is much higher and much more visible with SUPs.

No matter how many stickers I put on my board, how could I ever compete with the guys on here who spent many, many hours and days painstakingly cutting up full deck grip into some random artwork pattern then transferring the several hundred little pieces all in their correct locations onto their 10'er. That's sticker fetish.

Anyway, even the stickers on your boards won't ever look as cool as my giant "UNIT" sticker on my Holden SS ute.

Funny article... Jeez its been a while since the last lot of SUP bashing threads on this and other forums so it hardly comes as a surprise.

As said before in another thread...
"Goat boats for hemoroid sufferers", so the article sort of ties it all in together.

Watch out, here's a taste of what is to come at a beach near you....

Best response to an article like this is to keep turning up. I'm off to Flinders on the weekend. I sold my longboard ages ago and I definitely have more money than sense. So bite me.

honestly who gives a ****.

Stand up, lie down, sit down, do a ****ing handstand, were all out there for the same purpose, to enjoy the water.

Like its been said, there are just as many kook shortboarders and longboarders out there, not only SUPs, and with SUP being a new sport it makes sense for there too be more of them.
You could take away all the SUPs, bodyboarders, goatboaters and every single break in your local metro area would still be crowded. And I'd put my morgage on the fact there would still be surfers paddling around out there with a chip on there shoulder coz the bloke who just paddled out isnt a "local".

Build a bridge I reckon.

Spot on!! After the dummy spit some old long boarder had at me out the alley today (then invited me back to the carpark for a blew, (but never showed)) I realised that it doesnt really matter what you surf, how you surf it or how well you surf it, as long as we are all enjoying it and not putting everyone else in danger everytime you take off on a wave.
Surf within your means and leave the attitude on the beach...........
My 5 cents

I agree guys , whilst the "noise" will always remain why can we not take pleasure in what we do..

I have made a few stickers to spread my opinion ..
