And while we are at it, if you are going to surf a SUP with a crew of prones, don't stand up out the back like a lighthouse keeper. It just p1sses people off when SUPs paddle out past everyone and stand there like the lord of the surf. If you sit in between waves it keeps your 'popup' skills for when you go back to a prone board as well

Pfft !

It's STAND UP paddling isnt it ? - if I wanna sit down for a chat I'll ride my longboard or get a goat boat.

Im with you billboardWhy would you want to sit down and talk to the cranky old farts anyway

even better when they don't notice you till you stand up and paddle away.

I think my emence knowledge of surfing other peoples breaks/points/reefs ect.. is called for at this point in time. The most important thing you need to remember is to remain invisible, now in saying that I mean float around for a while a bit off the bank let the school get comfortable with your presance, faint in to the school and then back off a few times. Then as they become more acoustom to your pressence slowly move a little closer to the school always looking for the weakest links.Use the sets to split the school into seperate parts and then move in for the kill.Whilst they are divided you will be able to move through the middle completely un-noticed picking up what ever leftovers remain and then drift around again for a second run.It will be hours before those boneheads work it out.(this works best with prone boards but I dont see why it wouldnt work for SUP too.)[}:)]

It also helps to hunt in packs! A few to distract the Alpha male , a few to disctract his seargents and that leaves some nice set waves we can take advatage of.

I am 100% with Goaty here. Sit your ass down if your "waiting for a wave" in the pack, or within paddle length from it. Put yourself in the others surfers position.

Here's a tip too. Be friendly. I find nothing more annoying than some guy on a SUP paddling out. Expecting to be hated on, with a frown on his face. Avoiding eye contact. Perpetuating the angst.

Sometimes that friendliness will not be returned, but most of time it will be met with a like response.

Seems this topic comes up every now and then, with pretty much the same responses.

If you get negative vibes by some of the crew out in the waves when your out SUP surfing this is pretty normal. Some people are just generally unhappy and need to vent.

Although if your getting bad vibes all the time, from alot of people in the surf. Maybe what your riding is not the problem........

Cheers Pete, I was beginning to think maybe I am alone in my views on this. I always try and say gidday if I'm sitting close to crew and sitting makes this a lot easier. Personally for me a big part of enjoying a surf is having a good vibe in the water and we are lucky here on the northern beaches that most places are frequented by civilised, often older crew. That said the younger crew are my local are also quite respectful if you treat them with a bit.

I'd imagine the QLD points that Billboard and Co frequent are a different ball game altogether though.

Goat and Pete, I don't think it's any different up here. I surf my local beachies and points a bit and I find just as you have said that if you end up surfing the same peak with people and sit and chat and be friendly combined with some common sense and respect the problem disappears. You're just another bloke having a surf then. Once they see you can handle your craft, not waste waves and not going to take every set and leave them with none you're OK.

I still try to surf other banks and peaks and parts of the wave that they are not all over though. If I want to surf those parts I generally have a 6'2 in the car that does a better job. But if you end up in close quarters you just do what you have always done.

I like lying in to paddle in to a couple on my SUP from time to time also.

I'm over giving respect to get nothing in return. I sat on my board on Sunday morning and listened to 3 longboard riders call SUP riders all the names under the sun. Call us words that I don't even use, and I can be colourful at times, and talk about how we should all be banned and are only SUP'ing cause we haven't the skill to ride anything else. I then watched these three proceed to drop in left right and centre.

Now this I believe is only a small minority of surfers, and for the most part many accept us out there. Those guys that respect my right to ride whatever craft I do in an ocean that is there for everyone to use will get it in return, no problems.

Haha i love this topic!!
you guys have it all wrong!! if i go for a SUP i dont paddle around waiting to be for some one to say Hi or go out and hope not to piss someone off, i just get out there and do what i do. If someone out there doesnt like SUP's then tough siht i could care less and i'm not going to change the way i surf just because someone else can't get a wave or is too old to see the light. If someone wants to have a chat in the surf then sweet i'm all for a good chat and it does keep a good vibe going but it wont get you any extra waves here on the Goldy as there is always 500 other guys who you are not talking too!!! If you go out and ask for respect you'll get none, if you want respect that much then get out there and earn it for me i couldn't care less if some one in the surf respects me or not.

They alley is a great exsample all the longboards and short boards always want the SUP's to stay out on the wide bank!! I say **** that all the best waves are behind the rock and thats where i would be if i was on my Shortboard so that's where i go on my SUP, but remember if you go behind the rock and KooK it and clean some one up then i'm sure someone will be pissed at you but it will be the same if you Kook it on a short board and clean someone up as well. One rule SUP to your abilitly!!!! if you do that and smile then happy days!!

For me it does not change weather i go out for a surf on my short board or my SUP my attuide stays the same.

You need to make up your mind cross dresser
I hate to say this but I agree with goatboater on this,I see guy's paddle out and standing tall not a good thing to do where I surf,it just sparks the fuel.

Make up my mind about what ? When I sup I stand up - when I ride a longboard I sit or lay down - when I need to I prone paddle my sup out through the break and then stand up and go on my merry way - However I do not sit down out the back on my sup and don't see why I should

As I said different ball game on the goldie and I would probably have the same 'f#ck you' attitude if I had to surf in a place like that. Different in a smaller surfing community where you see the crew in the street. That said if kooks want to give me a hard time they will get equal parts back - and I agree I surf my SUP the same places I rode my shorty and Goatboat We don't have the Mal problem at these places either as they are too gnarly.

Its not a massive problem over here. Surfed with a few SUPs a couple of weeks ago and they were fine. They were sitting a bit further out and generally sitting on there own bank so all was good. They went just carving through the pack like I have seen before.
Infact having a think about it I havnt seen any SUP rage over here for ages, Legion must be surfing during the week

Ive had more problems with kook longboarders than SUPs in recent times

Youve gotta take a look at yourself if your getting upset because someone sanked you or dropped in on you or made you feel small because , god forbid hes standing up , is it really that big of a deal. Maybee the guy who dropped in got sick of waiting for waves because there where a few hogging them all , or didnt know better. Go to the Alley and you will see the same guys getting 90% of the good waves , those same guys will be the ones bleating if a sup or anyone else gets in the way. When some one drops in on me , water of a ducks back.Ill just return the favour. But you definately should not be in situations that are crowded if you dont have the ability to be safe.

I should clarify, nobody gave anything to me directly. As I said earlier I was just sitting on my board watching everyone have a good time when I drifted toward these guys and overheard them on a rant.

I was at the Alley, was amused how they protested at how SUP's have ruined the place. I have surfed that place for over 25years and yeah it's getting busier, but it has always been a spot that attracted every type of water craft going.

Isn't the problem really the guys that come out and don't understand how it works? They paddle out past the pack of prone surfers waiting for a wave and then proceed to pick off every set-often riding it in a straight line through the pack. Which has always been the problem with mals in the surf-SUPs are just an extension of that, being that many SUP riders ride massive boards, sit outside the pack and get in way before any other surfers can-catching every set because they can.

It's not the riders like Goaty that know how it works and work their turn in with the others out there surfing. And I agree with sitting down out the back with the shortboarders-it just changes the vibe and non-segregates SUP surfers from others, I'll also call sets for other surfers and NOT take every set wave.

Like others have said, common sense (that is common surfing sense)-those that have a lifetime in the ocean surfing will understand how it works, and have that common surfing sense-those that haven't won't get it-hence the idea that started the thread, re. some 'rules' or 'guidelines'.

If the short boarders or long boarders would watch the SUP surfer they would always get positioning on every wave. A surfer would understand the statement.
