The priority would to have it somewhere with consistent swell and hollow/heavy waves, preferably a reef break IMO.

Depends on the time of Year. Believe it or not we had our national Goatie titles at Margaret River every 5 years and it always pumped. We also had a comp at Bells a few times and got decent waves - albeit fat. We had one at Phillip Island as well - that place pumps also!!

The Gnaraloo people don't want to have comps there, by the sounds as it would be perfect I would think for gnarly stuff.

If you had a waiting period of say 2 weeks there are reef breaks in Sydney in Autumn /Winter that would break consistently and are farkin heavy. Would be better near a big population base such as Goldy or Sydney I would have thought for publicity, crowds, etc.

If it was the Goldy you would have to luck out and get Kirra or Burleigh or Snapper with some size, Straddie (north or south) would be sweet but not the best for the publicity machine I wouldn't have thought.

Following the events at Sunset Beach in Hawaii and Anglet France, the third event of the tour is kicking off this weekend in Tahiti.
Aussie riders include Dave Muir and Scott McKercher.
2010 is the first year of the tour and we are looking to hold a major event in Australia next year.

For further info and updates please go to www.watermanleague.com

WL, can you please tell us who you are and what your link is to this "Standup World Tour"?

Hi WL, we still want to know who you are as you said "we are looking to hold a major event in Australia next year" and you have listed Australia as your country in your profile. It sounds like you are involved with this tour.

Hi Mike Man, we are a Hawaii and UK based company and organise the events.
(Just changed it in the profile)

We are looking to work with an Australian company and are speaking to a number of people. If you are involved in this area it would be great to connect.

Lets discuss further if you like:
christos.danias@watermanleague.com
tristan.boxford@watermanleague.com

Thanks for clearing this up. I am not in the industry but am one of the founding members of SUPSA (the first SUP club in Australia). There are many clubs now right around Australia and the standard of SUP surfing is really high (as you have just seen with Dave Muir just taking out the event in Tahiti).

I like the concept of a "world tour" but would like to see it a little more open to the rest of the world in a non-exclusive manner. You have 4 Australians on this tour but I am sure that we could provide a whole lot more top guys who could be really competitive. There are probably also a lot of other countries around the world who have really hot surfers who could be there.

Good luck with the rest of the tour.

Thanks Mikeman. There is no doubt that the Aussies are ripping as Dave just proved. You have to keep in mind that the tour has just been created and as the events go by, the rankings will develop and the athletes will enter globally through various trials.
We have to kick off from somewhere in 2010 and as the years progress have more countries joining in.

They should have the comp at "Grunters" Margaret River it only starts to work at 6-8 ft and is a thumping hollow wave nice and long too if it lines up all the way inside to "Inside Grunters". For those that have not see this wave it is on the old classic, " Bunyip Dreaming" & "Green Inguna" videos with Munga, Luke , Margo and co.

Tristian has been running windsurfing events for a long time. I remember the tropical energy events, baja and I think a few others were run. He then created the company which has kicked of a world SUP tour, the water man league. I guess his aim is to become the defacto world tour, like what the ASP has done. And then one day to do qualifiers and the whole deal.

I agree.

It's a good turn on a SUP on a pretty substantial wave-but that doesn't rate in the real world.

Not too sure old man Robdog needs to get out much more than he does. The man shreds on a shortboard or sub has a similar style to Tom Curran on either and Im sure he sees his son Adam Robertson out at 6ft Whites on his back hand or 8 -10 ft Winki,
Yeah I reckon old mate Robdog knows his stuff

Huh? Have a look at almost any pro shortboarder who surfs well in big waves. All will have a bottom turn that puts that to shame. Have a look at Occy, both TCs, Dane, AI, etc, etc, etc. Or, have a look at this:

Crappy squashed image, but you get the gist. How am I putting my foot in my mouth? The SUP guy's bottom turn is good, but it's not great. And yeah, loco4olas' avatar is just as good.

the sup bottom turn is good for anybody, but the thing is where it's taking him. he is going to have to go vertical, which on a sup like the one he is on, is pretty impressive

Add the speed he has generated from his last turn.

I agree not the all time surfing bottom turn, but on a sup its amazing and as Lacey said ,there is only one thing on his mind [}:)] I am going to smack the crap out of that lip, love it

i really dig this photo. to me, he probably used his paddle start the turn, but he has taken it out of the water and gone through with his upper body rotation to really get the most out of this turn. in this position, when he comes of the top he can us that pre-loaded position to blast the cr## out of the lip of the wave and come back down for the next turn. text book turn
cheers

Dave has told me that use of the paddle is critical in his bottom turn. It enables him to lean out way more by balancing off it.
