What are the rest of you old fossils going to ride 14 or 12 6 ?
Sounds like we have a choice

12'6" for me Noel

Good
I'm pretty sure me and stoksy will be on 12 6
But a 14 would be good for the 20 ks

forty is still ok, when you hit the 50, thats a whole new ball game. actually i reckon 45 is the 'there is no going back, its only going to get worse' turning point.

old coots, you wouldn't want to paddle 20 k's on a 12'6 if it's not dw wind.

looks like a cracker event

cheers

ps the only good part about being older is letting the younger guys know an old man beat them if you beat them. you, being the older gent, have an excuse when you lose, the younger crew don't

If the waves are anything like last year it will definately be a good show!!

Yep Phil, Under 18s (as long as we get numbers....i will let you know how many to make it go ahead)

A lot of planning is going in to this event to make it awesome for all of us, so any feedback will definately be taken in to consideration leading up to the event!

Dylan- under 18 as of 31 December 2012 to qualify for the juniors.

Entries have opened and we have already had a great response! The sooner everyone enters the better the event will be! :)

The entry page For racing is http://www.surfingaustralia.com/nsw/event.php?id=536

And one race entry payment allows you to compete in any or all of the races. (excluding dash for cash) you do not need to be a Surfing NSW member to enter the racing.

Dash for cash entry at registration, $20.

The entry page for surfing is www.surfingaustralia.com/nsw/event.php?id=478. You need to be a Surfing NSW member to enter the surfing. membership form can be found on Surfing NSW website.

Ok, this is not something that has not been made clear till now. That is, on top of the entry fee, to surf the SUP event you have to pay the adittional $55 plus GST to join Surfing NSW?

Due the event being promoted on the Surfing NSW website this is something I expected from the outset. I am wondering though if others have been "caught out".

Maybe I should start looking for a race board? The multiple event fee is starting to look like good value!

As this is the first year that Surfing NSW has held SUP Race events, the decision was made to waive the Surfing NSW membership requirement for racing. This decision was not taken lightly, as it is normally required to be a member of Surfing NSW to enter any Surfing NSW sanctioned event.

Membership has been a requirement for the past SNSW SUP Surf events, and is the reason that entry fees for the Surfing are quite low- other SUP surfing events are over $100 to enter. This is listed under "condition" on the event page for the Surf entry.

Membership benefits are:

Surfing NSW Sticker and Key ring
Personalised Membership Card
Email alerts for all upcoming Surfing NSW events and programs
Eligibility to enter Surfing NSW and Surfing Australia sanctioned events
Personal Accident Insurance. Click here to view insurance policy benefits
20% discount on travel insurance and Complimentary Natural Footed Medical Kit (worth $60) with every surf trip booked through The Surf Travel Company
25% discount on 12-month Australia's Surfing Life magazine subscriptions.
25% discount on 12-month Australian Longboard Magazine subscriptions.
$10 discount card from SurfStitch.com
Chance to win one of three monthly prizes from Vestal , Ocean & Earth and Verta
Worldwide corporate car hire rates through Hertz

Surfing NSW is a non-profit organisation so all money made is re-invested in to developing all surfing disciplines in our State.

Hope that clears things up a bit, our intensions with this event are to make it attractive to all SUP competitors of all levels, so any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Elyse,

Thanks for clarifying the matter.

It's not a major drama. I was just thinking of those who do not know how Surfing NSW works. Although I was expecting to have to join, I did not notice the condition until I filled the actual entry form. As I had budgeted for the membership (while maybe hoping to get away without paying ) it was not a problem.

To be honest, I have not been a member for a nearly a decade and was expecting the cost to be at least $70 or more. The $56 and a few cents is quite reasonable (Noting I got it a few dollars wrong above). Hopefully events like this will encourage some SUP mags and manufacturers to join the discount list.

I will still be looking for a race board; sounds like fun!

See you all there, Shane.

Just wondering if membership to a reciprocal state branch of Surfing Australia (eg. Surfing Queensland or Surfing Victoria) is adequate for interstate competitors or whether we need to join Surfing NSW aswell?

Being a financial memeber of another state is adequate, so i should rephrase it as "You must be a financial member of a Surfing Australia affiliated state branch to enter the Surfing divisions"

I agree Ali. Plus why hold it on the Friday after the surfing? How about the Sat or Sun depending which day the marathon is held?

Hey Goatman, the reason the technical race is being held on the Friday is that Thurs/Fri the event is at One Mile Beach (or backup options), and Sat/Sun the event is based at d'Albora Marina. On the weekend the Marathon race will be held one day, and a teams event the other, as well as a Short Course flatwater race, and a Dash for Cash where $1000 is up for grabs.

Can also tell you now that there is $8000 prize money up for grabs on the Marathon Race, Technical Race and Dash for Cash.

Fair enough Elyse. Is there an 'old man's' category in any of the racing?

Yeh elyse you have to look after us grumpy old men

I believe, as of next year, in all State and National competitions ,there will be an over 50's division in all events, the Sport is coming of age in its recognition of all categories......

Thats great to hear MJ.......but, doesnt really help fossils like us this year. Dont get me wrong, I know we have to take baby steps, but when you have a group who are keen as mustard and ready to roll, why put the brakes on. On a similar note, pretty sure the four finalists in the Over Forties Division in Vicco would be keen to compete at the Nationals. Why then do we only get one slot? Whats with the formula? I reckon if you make the final then you should be able to compete. However, the big picture seems to be cooking away nicely, with the introduction of the distance and technical races and certainly the introduction of age divisions is going to further enhance the already ballistic trajectory of this mind bendingly, stoke inducing sport/passtime/lifestyle.
Cheers

I agree Sparx, there needs to be more spots available to Vicco's, there is a pretty high standard down here in all styles of events and that should be acknowledged, there needs to be at every opportunity, pressure by all those interested, on all events organizers across the country to broaden the horizon as far as acceptance of the inevitable age's categories introductions.

Whilst the push for youth in the sport is a great positive, the demographic and maybe the growth area in the sport are the older categories, whilst the stereotypical sup paddler, bald fat blah, blah is now longer applicable with the average fitness level of the older participants forging ahead in leaps and bounds.

We Vicco's should put the boards on the roof and go north on a surf trip............... [been a while]

So what your saying is there will be u18, 19-39 (open), 40-44, 45-49 and 50+? I know the demographic of our sport skews that way but you will never attract youth if you don't give them every opportunity. 3 catagories for essentially a 10 year gap shows where the focus of the sport is, but we have to look after our young participants equally.
