i agree if you cant paddle back out the back you should be on a board that you can. the 5 prone stroke rule is a good one!

If a competitor in a contest prone paddles back out to the line up
I don't reckon they should be scored at all on their next wave.
This would make sure all the stand up paddle skills of the surfer
Are on display.

Nope, its NOT how you get out there, its how you destroy the wave
I look at every wave like a launch pad[}:)][}:)][}:)]

I always try to paddle out on my feet, but if you are caught on the low side of the bank battling the waterfall it's near impossible to stay up, so where do you draw the line.

Re the tail slides, if you don't count them Ivan Van Vuuren (the Coreban ripper) would never get out of a heat. They have their place it keeps the rider tight in the point scoring pocket of the wave. It also keeps the speed up for the next manoeuvre.

Even on big rail to rail cutbacks the tail can still break free at the end, again where do you draw the line on the slide?

Salter, Fanning ect they slide the sh!t out of their boards.

On this topic - what should score higher.

1- A wave that has good length, but with many critical moves done on it

or

2- Shorter wave (not as good a wave) but with 2 or 3 rail to rail carves, and good finishing move.

Option 2 everytime.

Your not there with your 11'6 trying to step off on the beach to keep your hair dry?

Phill

Hmm how long you been surfing for pmorgan?

OG - I would not score the following,3 6 9 10 11 and 14,all lame moves in my book!
hope that helps

Agree Mac

Classic how one typo can change a sentence so quickly I meant in option 1 - "without any critical moves"

62Mac, How long have I been surfing for? Odd question? Relevance? Reason I ask the question is from observation in some contests...

Yes but what's the point of staying "tight in the point scoring pocket of the wave" to keep up the speed for the next manoeuvre, if that next manoeuvre is just another identical dish pan slip and slide?

Even on big rail to rail cutbacks the tail can still break free at the end, again where do you draw the line on the slide?

Big rail to rail cutbacks that bust out the rail at the end are rad and in a totally different ball game to the flat pan slidey things being refererred to here

Salter, Fanning ect they slide the sh!t out of their boards.

Slater and the like are doing more of a guage than a slide, look at the pic of Fanning and how deep the gauge is that he's ripped in the face of the wave, and the amount of spray.

p.s. I know all this because my brother is head judge of SPSC

For sure Mac it's surfing and all about the wave,
but as you were so eager recently to point out that the paddle surf
contests are being won by longboarders to be honest it also in a
small way and is a start at the competitors actually spending a fair amount
of time on a sup.
Just some thought into improving the sport,
Cheers.

Yeh,that comment was a little tongue in cheek on my behalf

I see where your coming from and I guess in a comp there needs
to be a rule which is in line with the sport, stand up and paddle

in fact it IS how you get out there as its one of the skills of SUP....if thats not your thing go ride Lng or shortboards....plenty of scope for you there and you dont have the drawbacks of the big/wide SUP boards. look at the sunset footage....they were standing up paddling back out in 15foot stuff! seeing pro's prone paddle back out in 1-2 slop is BS

it' mightn't be right, but all their doing is saving energy if it's crappy water

what ever the reason/s doesnt make it right in my mind. Id rather watch a Sb or Lb comp and see **** hot prone surfing. If its Sup I want to see the whole discapline. It makes me think they are just doing SUP for the comps.

If that is your view, whats your view on the guys at the snapper comp getting towed out after every wave ? In your purest view they should be really paddling out. That is the whole disciplne when it comes to surfing right, paddle out, run up the beach and rock off ?.....But then they would get half the amount of waves, and far less entertaining to watch. Prone paddling out all the time would just look silly, but at times it is inevitable. Get my ass kicked over and over or get out of there quick... I know what i would chose...

I couldnt care what SB do, thats their format. At the end of the day they are highly payed pros and they should be able to paddle back out without to much problem, hell they surf most days. Standing up is what makes SUP different, take that away and whats the difference to LB or SB......
