Hi all,guys stopped at a beach today after work just for a swim,what i found puzzling
was a council sign prohibiting SUP,it was bracketed with the usual no camping,or dogs etc.allowed on beach sign.Is this common or a rarity ? or are the SUP just getting singled out ? Anyway what was amusing was that every other form of water sport was operating in the area,board riders,sailboarders and kitesurfers yet no SUP, i guess the signed worked.

Gerroa beach opposite the shop near caravan park,this comes under kiama council who are known for being d*%ks.

We saw this sign at Gerroa a few weeks back, it's a fake as a bit of a joke from some of the local Mal crew.

It was very well done, and very convincing it was almost real. On the water there the crew are pretty reasonable and happy to say g'day.

I experienced SUPs banned at some breaks along the Californian coast. I had a run in with a life guard who was threatening me with a fine if I entered the water with my SUP. The signs stated "No Stand Up Paddling". So I told him I was going to surf without my paddle and prone surf with my board (heaps more dangerous, there was only one other person in the water). Nothing he could do as I wasn't stand up paddling. It's good to be a smartass aussie!

No one should be telling us where or when we can surf anywhere IMO.

We have equal rights to any stretch of water as do shortboarders, longboarders and anyone else who wants to have a crack.

If anyone put a sign up where I was SUP'n I'd be throwing a towel over the sign and telling them to bugger off.

How could they enforce that? You could kneel and paddle, then when you catch a wave and stand up then you're not paddling, so for the whole time you could be on a SUP board with a SUP paddle but NEVER be Stand Up Paddling.

Ditching the paddle and using the board was a good idea - no paddle - no arguement.

This reminds me of the first time I skied at Blue Cow. There was a big sign 'No Snowboards'. Now 90% of their business is snowboards (& the sign is gone).

We're setting the trend Bros!

Well done to the maker but totally bogus, word is they were not put there by local Mal crew but blow in Sydney long boarders.

Ive lived in this area my whole life and Ive never sup'd Sandon and a few other points mainly because I consider them sup banned.

364 days of the year I'd agree...Easter Sunday with 2 out with little lines stretching down the point I took the punt - as you would.

The issue at Gerroa and I imagine many other places is the influx of new SUP riders without any knowledge of surf ettiquite .This has put pressure on the previously reasonable wave sharing SUPpers to chase their share of wave more aggressively thus creating a bad vibe with other surfers. Up until last week I had never had cause to be abusive in the surf( I just put up with the odd drop in ) but a snaking SUP rider who didn't use his paddle once up and on the wave changed that. Where do you buy those great stickers!

Yeah Pete, I know how you feel I,ve been surfing short boards since the dead sea was still sick and the amount of fat middle aged balding long boarders that you have to steer around because they paddle out directly where they fell off ,after dropping in on someone is really annoying. I,m like you Pete ,I just put up with it ,and when you get some of those great stickers get one made for your forehead and stop branding all SUP riders as snaking wave pigs who don,t use there paddles once they are on a wave ? ??? whatever that means???

Hi all, I live at the beach in question it has been placed at the entrance to part of the beach that is used by the local surf school, they flag about 300 metres of the beach, during lessons, it can still be used by anyone who is in CONTROL of their surf craft whilst the surf school is in operation. Concerns were raised that totally obese, accounts, lawyers (you know the type they also by Harley's and black Nazi second world war type helmets, get their bike exhausts modified to be super extra loud with no baffles, and cruise the streets thinking their oh so totally hip and cool) and generally other fat SUP gumbies were using their craft in the surf school zone whilst lessons were in operation, these uncoordinated fat fools were out of control and a menace to the safety to the (sometimes extremely hot) backpapker crowd out in the water. Hence they had to be banned, these idiots can still use any other part of the beach, get in everyone else's way, jump off their craft when heading straight towards you, and act like selfish hero's wanting every wave, just cause they can, I could too if I owned the QE2 instead of a surfboard! So better get used to it, there needs to be areas made safe from SUP obese fools and one can see just like jet ski's they should be banned.

Yep - I'm a fat sup kook and although I rarely sup near surfers and prefer to find quiet secluded breaks, I did jump off my board a couple of weeks ago - only to save a booger (adult) from being smashed by it. After catching, then backing off the 2 previous waves (after I had bailed knowing that he had gone for them), he decided to then go for one after it had sectioned and cut in under my feet from the inside the wash whilst I was on the drop. I jumped off the back, grabbed my leggy, got dragged a few metres & copped my own board to the head - 7 stitches in my cheek for the effort. Had I been a better surfer, I might have avoided the situation without injury - hindsight is a great thing.
