I'm sure if you are coming to the Roar industries comp you have seen the forecast which is saying 20 knots from the North. Please check back here tomorrow for more info but at the moment we will be taking it to the spit where the waves will be pumping and clean in that wind. Our main aim in this comp is to give the riders the best waves possible and the banks are very good up there at the moment.

Will know more tomorrow so please check back then or feel free to PM or call me any time.

Cheers Jacko

Just got word that if the forecast stays as it is we will be going to the spit

If this is the case expect 2 to 3 foot lefts and rights and nice and clean.

We are working on that. I would like to have the race on the southern end as allot of the Spono's are down there. Its all a timing thing. Will post more tomorrow as we nut it out, I'm just glad we can go to some where with waves ..

One more thing To win the Board you must be at the presentations or there will be a re draw until some one clams it. The board will be a 8'10 Naish ,grip and board bag.

Cheers Jacko

Hi roar crew, no idea of your race distance but thought i'd throw in the idea of racing around wave break roughly 4km(maybe to long) but would sure make it interesting with tides and wind? Wavebreak challenge? That north wall of wavebreak is a killer! Also plenty of beakons in broadwater to nut out a course.East side SURF & West side(broadwater) Race. Just a thought?

Hi Labs, long time no see, haha I know you paddle wave break often so my money would be on you mate.

btw, great idea for a paddle race but I think the Roar comp is to close to change.
However Jacko and Angie think about that one. Cruise over by boat with family and friends sitting on the beach cooking snags sucking on beers cheering on, they could walk around the island, what a great venue.

Jacko that is brilliant news about the surf comp move - I have been checking the forecast all weeking and have been a bit bummed about the prospect of 1 foot onshore stuff at Currumbin.

When you say the race will be at the south end, do you mean Currumbin? That would be great as nice and close to the airport

Yeah mate I'm trying my best to make sure the riders get the best waves possible. Will sort out the race stuff this afternoon and let everyone know as soon as its sorted. There will also be a email sent out to all competitors notifying them of any changes.

Ok here is the email about the comp the whole event will be run at the spit race included as well as presentation. As much as we would love to finish at Currumbin there is just not enough time in the day for us to move the comp just for the race. Please any questions feel free to PM me or surfing queensland.

Dear Competitors,

Due to forecast northerly winds it's been decided that this weekend's Roar Industries SUP Challenge will be moved to its back-up location at the Spit, Southport.

Whilst it's unfortunate that the Alley won't be firing for the event, the forecast looks good for clean contestable waves at the Spit with ideal warm weather to sample a few XXXX Summer Bright Lagers after the paddle.

The paddle component of the event will remain approximately the same distance at around 2.2km. A course map is attached for your information.

Further info (tentative, please check hotline on Sat morning)

Event start time: 8am

Location: The Spit

Heat draw: check www.surfingqueensland.com on Friday

Event Hotline: (07)30306388

Very limited spaces are still available. Entries via www.surfingqueensland.com No beach entries will be accepted.

From all the team at SQ and Roar Industries, good luck on the weekend and we'll see you at the beach.

Kind regards,

Mark Winson

So far there are 29 entries and Surfing Qld is trying to go for 40.

Entries close this Thursday as they need to do the draws. So, don't assume that you will be able to enter on the day. You can enter on-line on the surfing Queensland web site.

Also, you do not need to belong to any club to enter.

Let's all support the event no matter what the conditions will be.

Thanks for posting the map mike. The waves should be good up there, i was up there the other day and it was pumping and it was blowing 25knots from the north.

I know with the bad forecast it might have scared a few away but now at the spit and know it will be in good waves there's no excuse and realy a 1 in 48 chance of winning a SUP is pretty good. Sorry its a 1 in 47 as i will not put myself in the draw.

I reckon it will be a cracker of a comp with these conditions, being at the Spit.

Sunny, offshore and little wedges all over the place - had a few goaty comps at the spit and they were always fun!

The race course looks sweet as well.

Just a reminder that both legs of the event have to be on the same board.

The wave riding leg will hold more weight than the race will so let's all bring down those high performance "short boards" and see how far we can push the standard of wave riding this year. Last year was pretty high so it will be good to see where it will be this year...

what is the paddle like when the tide has turned and the water is flowing out of the bar for the race

ouch

wooohooo see ya there guys and gals

hay tea tree

after watching kelly margetts disappear from sight before we even turned the first marker you might need a longer board or a jet engine proto typed from the nasa space program to be in the running

im just about to call the north koreans to see what they have on the cheap

It does get very crowded at the spit but there is a fat section out near the pipe which mals and goaties mainly hang on so it should be O.K.

The tide is coming in all morning which will suit the race perfectly ,great place for the spectators as well they will be able to walk along the wall and be beside the competitors for 90% of the race.

Yeah i know those dudes are paddling machines , raced against him in the kirra race and watched him head out through the break , it was prettty awesome how he just charged out and had no problem at all gettting over some sizeable shore dump.

No good contacting the North Koreans mate i just got their last , nuclear sub real cheap.

Would be great if the race was in the morning, but I can't see the surfing finishing before the 11am high tide. With the tide running out until about 5pm, it looks like the race will be against it no matter when the comps finishes. Could be a hard paddle on little boards.

Just jumped out of my Casso TimeMachine (a bit like the Casso SuckerCam - but different). Been to next week to check the surf at The Mambo and decided to hop up to The Spit for a quick surf. Found this piece of paper in the lying in the sand...

BTW - there were fun little waves at The Mambo with great weather.

Here is an extract from the event Rules and related information:

Surfers are required to use the same board for both components of the competition so board selection and becomes a strategic part of athletes campaign.

Judges are using the SUP judging criteria and competitors will be judged on how they utilize their paddle to push into waves and execute maneuvers.

Once surfing component of the event is completed, surfers will be asked to gather for the ocean paddle beginning on the beach at the spit and finishing in the Gold Coast Broadwater - Please refer to site map

Open Division Final to finish at 1.20pm
20 Minute break for competitors
Paddle Race to commence at 1.40pm
Upon completion of race presentation will take place at finish line in conjunction with a BBQ and beers for all competitors

Let the fun begin...
