I have just built myself a 9' 2" gun. Between AKU shaper and with some great input from DTM it came out pretty much how I pictured it. The final dimentions are:

9'2" x 27" x 4 1/2" thick. Volume was 116 liters before finishing and as I took a fair bit of foam out of the rails I am guessing the final volume is closer to 110-112. The board is designed for waves in the head high to 3 x times overhead range and more powerful reef break type conditions.

From the pics you will see that I moved the fins from their original position - which was way too far back and made the thing surf off the last couple of feet of rocker giving it very little drive. I moved all three of them almost 5 inches forward and it was a completely different board.

The first thing I notice riding it in head high waves is the way you can draw out a turn when necessary - but it can carve a very tight arc when required by planting the back foot - much more easily than my 8'9". The reduced area in the tail and very fine rails (at the tail) make it feel so responsive!! It also has a generous rocker. I need to test it in some good size stuff to really get the feel of it but so far so good.

Stability wise it is a bit wobbly at times with my 82 kegs on it, however she paddles very quickly so should be good for getting into em - which was the reason for keeping a bit of volume in her.

I tried to make it really strong and used 2x6 oz bottom with 2 x 6oz deck and a 4oz patch for 3/4 of the deck. There are now 6 plugs in it and even with a deck grip it still came in under 8kegs so I might have to chuck some lead weights on her for the really big stuff.

She should be a good Nor west WA board for our june trip I hope! A bigs thanks to DTM for his injput and the use of his mates shaping bay - and getting the foam sorted!!

Here are some dodgy pics:

Funnily enough Hilly I measured the 9'3" Ripper and the Laguna and there was only 3/4" dif from the tail to the rear of side fins. I took into account the lack of area and placed em similar to the Laguna. No sign of slide - but the rail is razor sharp and I actually had to drop a fin size from G7 to G5s!

Looks awesome ! I see some FCS fin mounts.... You can also try Pro Box Hawaii. Gives more flexibility than FCS mounts. The boxes are made out of light weight resins, like the light weight FCS fins.

http://proboxfinsystems.com/pages/products.html

This box system receives FCS Fins, but you can put in different inserts to change the cant of the fin, and you have almost 1 inch movement, forward and back, for the fins. But can't adjust toe-in. But some of the FCS Fins have pre adjusted toe-in.

A great system if you are experimenting with your fins....

Hey Goatman let us know when your heading to the NW. Will be up there for the last half of June staying north of Gnarloo. We mainly surf the offshore reefs using a 21' RIB. Be good to have another sup around to take half the flak.

Yeah looks sic Goatman!

Thats similar to something I'm hoping to work on over winter. I was thinking slightly
longer (around 9'6"ish) but keeping it closer to 4" thick. But the rail profile through the
tail looks spot on to my untrained eye.

Did you just use EPS foam? What grade of foam?

Nice, very nice-you're Longy bombie bound on that one.

Particularly like the plan shape and the refined tail foil.

I have a 702 Merrick gun that has a similar bunch of tail lift-same thing can really draw out the bottom turn with the long rail line-but get the back foot back and it's turns like a 601.

NW WA hey? Yeeehhaaa!

The first measurement went against my better judgment as I had this crazy notion to emulate a normal prone gun. The rocker on this isn't like a prone board.

Simondo thanks for the link have to look at those for the next one.

Miko will get a pic of the rail up later.

Hey Banaccas, the foam is 'M' grade, the best for SUPs and Goatboats IMO as it allows you to put a bit more glass on but still keep it light. I went 4 1/2" thick as it was the only way to go narrow but still keep enough volume.

Jenkz, we will be up there June 26th thru to about July 8, got 6 days at Gnaraloo then a week further north, hoping to catch up with Hilly for a surf or 2 as well.

Matt, hoping this will work well on the 2nd Bombie and perhaps Makaha.

Thanks for the input guys.

Can you put the back fin in 3 positions? Use one plug from each group? May be a compromise if drive is not your primary concern

Sorry to stray of topic here and hijack it - yeah it does look fully sick goatman, I'm sure it'll be good at cut backs, floaters, off the lips and all that other jive talk that surfers say.

What happened with that fishing sup of yours you were building Brendan? Can you write a post about it?

Ok - back to the 9'2"

Hey Rob, it keeps feeling better with each surf as I get more used to it. Had head high only on Sat and 1 1/2 head high through the week. I really don't think the fins are gonna be an issue in the big stuff Hilly, its got got that much hold from the rails, the main thing I don't want is it to track.

ha, he better get the GoatManDesigns production line up and running. i've got a question - the fins look to have a lot of toe' more than you normally see on a sup, is it just the picture and are they lined up to the nose or what

Hi Lacey, nah they actually have less than my Laguna, about the same as the 9 3 Ripper - they point a few inches to the side of the nose.

This board will definitely be good for barrells I reckon.
