I went down to Piggies on Monday, had a great day. But, when paddling hard for a little pearler something in my lower back told me to stop what I was doing. I haven't experienced that feeling before but my body is telling me something - and I should listen.

I'm going to give my back a rest this week and go fishing instead.

We had about a dozen paddlers today on our down-winder with a few doing it for their first time.. We had 20-30 knots but mostly about 20 knots so it was good conditions for the new guys.. I took some vid paddling my 14' Glide.. The new 12'6" Coreban and Jonathan's new 14' Open Ocean Starboard.

C'mon DJ you must have been back for an hour at least. You could have edited and uploaded that footage by now.

We wanna see it! The 3 board comparison will be interesting.

It was great fun this morning. It was my third downwinder and the board (glide 14') didn't seem to want to stop today. Got the hang of stepping back to keep the nose up and keep running. Great to see a big turn out today and thanks to Jonathan for bringing his brilliant trailer to fit all the boards on.

Still not nearly enough paddlers have got pro's strapped to their heads. Far too many runners are going to waste in not being documented properly with appropriate background music. Come to think of it the lighting wasn't all that good - next time can you guys see to it that there is some sun in the sky - it makes Melbourne always look gloomy.

I have to agree Oliver, there was a certain 'sameness' going on with the vids but after farting around making the bloody thing for hours you just have to post it. It looks grey but it was a magic warm day, felt like summer, pity you weren't there. Don't know what the surf was like, but on Friday Waratah Bay was a millpond.

And look at the numbers, next summer it's on! Don't all those guys cycling along beach road know that they could buy a downwind board for the same price as a new set of Italian carbon road rims, and the beauty is that if you fall off in the pack the worst thing that happens is that you land on a jelly!

Interesting to see how all 3 noses dealt with the trough, looked like the Naish was the most user friendly and not having to move to keep it up.

Geez you guys are quick to get them up as well...... The Race is on!

Oh and one day I tell you I have to paddle that not Bay on something, it looks like so much fun.

I tweaked something in my lower back earlier this week, paddling a bit too hard for a wave on Monday, otherwise I'd be there for sure.

You're right about the cyclists, however, my biggest fear of D/W is landing on a jelly face first.

very interesting vids dj and jonathan

on djs vid the naish seemed to pick up easier, but the starby ran a fair amount further. the pickup part could be dj not used to the starby and his is so dailed in on the naish. again, the guide to how to dw by dj-styl'n

jonathan has a lot more aggressive approach and is looking to run down the odd bump for the one in front. i haven't seen anybody or any board do that in 'its not a bay' vids.the starby reminded me of some of dales boards and how the fanatic 14' rides.

thx's guys enjoyed both vids
cheers

I have to admit that new Starbie has some pretty good glide.. The spoon'ish type nose reminds me of Greeno's kneeboards and they seem to have got the rocker spot on.

I'm looking forward to doing this comparo on a bigger day.. and hopefully get the Fanatic 14 in on the action.

G'day CMC you would be very welcome mate, pretty sure we could fix you up with a board and paddle, it Isn't Maui but when it's working it's not bad. It is interesting to see the way the different boards deal with the close waves. The thing I noticed was just how fast the Starboard is, the transition when you get on to the plane is so different to the Glide, it just sneaks up on you and before you know it the thing is going like a rocket. Certainly the nose is lower and I need to get used to this board but I've never been on anything that maintains momentum so effortlessly. The 17 Glide is really fast but I just don't have the power to accelerate it onto every swell like I can with the SB Race 14, because I'm so light I really rely on high stroke rate and a light board. I did a run on Daves Coreban 12'6 a couple of weeks ago and really loved it, maybe ultimately not the fastest on the water but so surfy and fun.
Funny we all seem to judge down wind boards on point to point speed but a huge part of it IMO is how fun it is on the waves and that was the pleasant surprise with the Starboard, just feels super relaxed on a wave. We've started exploring the south westerlies in the bay recently, more exposed and further to drive but bigger swells, can get be 3 to 4m if it's been blowing for a few days - remember DJ's unfortunate event photos?

spot on jonathan, i'm not sure how fast the fanatic 14' is, but gee, it is the funnist board to dw i've ever been on. i stood about 10 to 12" back from the handle and when on a link sections got back a lot more and it still wants to paddle and go.

it has changed my outlook on dw ing and now that's the spot or way i want to do it.

it seems to me to be more of a surfing style

look forward to some more updates. i dig watching the vids and checking out the runs and the different styles. might have to get one of these u beaut cameras one day

For those who enjoy these vids (I'm sure there's a few that don't find them too boring) and would like to see more.. I've done a 'directors cut' of mine...

Warning.. Those who find them boring will find this really boring.. or you could just listen to the new music by Tommy Bolin..

Looks like a hoot guys!

Very envious.

I got a once-off case of muchosworkisweekendis-disappointus, and a bit like oliver, have strained the lower back and core, but can't wait to get out there.

I can't watch your helmet-cams for too long. Feel ill. I'd love to come up with a mini steadycam rig to attach to the board, with a servo swivel so you can pan using controls on your paddle. That would be epic.
