Thanks for the background Piros. I hadnt heard of Secret Agent before. There designs sound fairly radical. How wide is the tri hull, any pics?

What is going on with Laguna Bay? Dont seem to hear much about the penetrator these days. That Pene 12'6 they did looked really good would be interested to see how it races.

Yes, it's a real pity that Stuey has gone a little off the boil lately. He really did have some great ideas and I liked what he was doing. I hope that he comes back as we need him to keep on pushing things.

Troy's Secret Agent 17 is really out there and I would really like to have a go on this is good condiitons. Once you see the pics you will see what I mean.

Nice read. Read some funny comment all good. I hope everyone is going in the saltwater festival 30km downwind race 8-9th May I've paid my entry. Yes it'll be a good test of your ocean ability. I do hope we get a 25 knot SSE wind with a
3-6feet South swell on the day that will be bulk fun. http://www.thesaltwaterfestival.com/
Just like those BCF commercials I'm not into 5km flat water racing I'll leave that to the ****s to talk it up how do they class that as having fun.

Because paddling 5km on flat water is "Fun" for some of us mere mortals. Exercise, as you proberly well know, produce happy endorphins called seratonin's this allows mothers all over the world the ability to cope with cranky children day in and day out, without resorting to vodka, and winni blues.

Some of us, lack the knowledge and experiance of you ocean going folk, (even though we are trying really hard to learn, even with the jeers, and smart ass comments from stranger's[}:)] standing on the beach's edge, you just have to get back on the board when you fall, or never learn) so therfore "I" must get MY "fun" anywhere "I" can...and i do have fun on the flat water and i am "learning" too have fun in the waves/ocean too

Great to see a wide variety of boards , my own board i felt is pretty slow in the flat and it is a DC17 but i noticed it was a far different design to the other Dc boards there.

I noticed it big time when i was next to a guy on a Naish 17 , i was really digging in maybee two stokes to his one and he was pulling away from me easy.Even Candice and Scotty from green line nearly beat me to the beach and they where on 12,6 boards.

Of course it could just be im a crap paddler.

If you live on the Goldie come have a training session with me at Bond Uni canal 5am I'll have a look at your technique it comes down to a lot of factors but if your on a 17fter & people are beating you on a 12'6'' you're definitely doing something wrong.

Hey Teatree,

Your board will not compete against the newer models as it was not designed for those conditions. My DC16 has a similar shape to yours and I would have been in the same situation as you were. Your board is designed for bigger downwind conditions. That's when it will come into its own, just like mine does. I would also have been beaten by guys like Travis on a 12'6" - there is no shame in that.

We are trying to build some of these flatter water designs into the big run designs and we think we pretty close to it...

Yeah i agree , it does go good in downwinders and catches runners easily and the nose prevents it pearling , i guess you need either two boards or best of both worlds. It was just a bit of a let down to be paddling your arse off and seeing smaller boards go past you.

Out of interest, was there many people on non-race specific boards ie 10fts 11 fts etc?

Thanks

thats the board i raced on. its a flatwater/open ocean lightwind/small conditions d/w board. we tried it in the big stuff, while just flies, it's a bit hard to use. the top guys would deal with, but it's too good for me. a few adjustments to make it behave and hopefully not lose too much speed. unfortunately, its shaping up that you will need at least 2 boards to do races on.
cheers

Lacey paddled the 4th one from the right and Dale paddled the 2nd one from the right (the one with the rudder). The one Dale paddled is the most recent one.

The Green DC17 (2nd one from the left) is the most recent 17' board.

You guys are paddling in the 30k salt water festival on these DC boards I hope should be a good race if the wind is up it will take less than 3 hours. Hopefully it will be bigger than the Honolua race as there was 11 open unlimited SUP's & 13 over 40's unlimited SUP's + May is a good month for Southerlies.

This does look like a nice race so hopefully we get a good turnout. The waters around these parts can be fairly unsettled so it should be a nice test of all of the boards out there.

It would be great if we had a lot of people coming over from interstate so that we can get a nice group of aspiring downwinders together. If any of you interstaters need any help with anything please let us know. There may be spare boards available, too, so don't let this keep you away.

Thanks for the offer. Presumably that extends to your near neighbours to the north as well I hope.

Is there a time of year thats better to visit or you get fairly regular winds?

Hey Lobes, of course this extends to you. It would be great to have you here. You can borrow my DC16, if you need a board. May is a good time of year as the Southerlies start kicking in more regularly. The South to North runs are longer and more groomed than the North to South runs over here.

Hey Big Sean,

Thanks Heaps for the event! It was great fun and a great opportunity to meet lots of other enthusiastic SUPers!

My only suggestion would be to at least announce the 2nd & 3rd place getters in the womens event given there were 10 women (all in one division on boards ranging from 12-17 foot). As a comparison 18 guys competed in two divisions (<12'6 & open) with placings to third in both their divisions.

It was a tough battle for second & third in the womens, with the final placings between Angie & Sue changing on the beach run! I reckon they deserved a mention even if there were no prizes!

It would also be great if you could list the board lengths (or divisions) next to the final placings so we can see where everyone finished within the relative divisions.

All in all I reckon it was a fab event!!!!!! Highly recommend to anyone thinking about coming next year!!!!
Thanks again
Mel

It's really good that there were 10 women and 18 men in this event. I suppose the organisers got caught out a little by the growth in the number of women competing. I am sure that if this trend continues you will see more events catering for the women. Keep it up as it's great for the sport.

Hey Big Sean,

I agree with JB Mel, It would be nice to have the results for the divisions of either womens open class, or 12'6 class, and the same with the mens. Because im pretty sure when i filled out the registration form I ticked the 'womens" box (parden the pun) and also the 12'6 box. I was a bit bummed it wasnt made clear that it was free for all regardless of board size, sex, etc, or i would have choosen my 16'. Why have the choice of division's on your rego if it's not going too be run that way??
But besides from my little whinge, it was a fabulous day, and i really enjoyed it. And i look forward too the next race...Salt i believe, but i think i will do the 10k.....any takers too teach me how too down wind before the race????? [}:)]

Thanks for the kind words mel. The race was great fun and SSOO hot! Yep i'm the first to confess i can't run to save my life cos of my tendinitis in both legs LOL but the run was part of the race.
Won't deny watching those few people easily running past me on the run section killed me .

The battle with sue was great fun.

Great to see a heap of new female faces getting into racing side of the sport, lets hope we see them out in ocean soon.

Great fun little race for sure.

See everyone at next comp.
