This is the 3rd 'annual' King of the Coast race and the last 2 have been great. Well run and a good atmosphere. I really encourage as many people as possible to come and join in.

G'day Swanie
With this King of the Coast Ocean Paddle Race they say there's $10,000 in cash and prizes
How much do the SUP divisions get in cash and prizes just curious as I'd like to go in the race, but SUPers are second class citizens in these Downwind Events
Thanks DW

I spoke with Sam from the Coffs Harbour International Ocean Race it cost $150 to go in the SUP division 25km race and all you get is a t-shirt and a towel sorry but I had to laugh what an insult
I guess at the end of the day if you wana race SUP's and have the best funnest day you have to go to Hawaii

i'll do the king race if its downwind.

not doing any upwind races any more if i can help it.

i know its hard for the organisers, but paddling upwind is the pits on a sup.

numbers were down last year for the coffs race and the price had a lot to do with it on my part . for that sort of money i expect every possible attempt is made to ensure its a dw run.but with most races this isn't the case. again i know how hard that is to do

sorry, i know a lot of people are going to be ****ty with me for this.

Apart from being a fantastic event, the KOTC race is also a fundraiser for the Sunshine Coast Children's Therapy Centre. A very well know Sunshine Coast SUP family are users of this service, you may recognize the family in the slide show on the front page. http://www.scctc.org.au

Prizemoney allocations should be sorted once most of the registrations are in, but there is $1000 allocated to the SUP Divisions. Keep on eye on this facebook page.

Nothing wrong with raising money for the Sunshine Coast Children's Therapy Centre thats a good thing to do. Myself and Ash did a charity Luncheon along side the Single fin weekend and raised $4,165.00 for the Gold Coast Children's Hospital. (it makes you feel good inside) when you can help children in need.

But like I say SUPers are rated as second class Paddlers when it comes to these events in Australia. If you wana race SUP's you have to go to Hawaii the Hawaiians are onto it. Australia can't work SUP racing out yet. But there is only one race in Australia that is worth doing and its run by Surfing Queensland on the Gold Coast around May if there was four of those races a year in Australia that would be Gold.

I'd love to run a Downwind event I would divide all monies equally across the board with all disciplines thats OC!, skies Paddleboards and SUP's as long as there is 10 or more competitors.

I think it's awesome that ski and outrigger events have opened their races up to SUP participation, I doubt any of them have thought SUP as "second class paddlers". Being included in theses races allows SUP paddlers a safe racing environment and chance to grow until the numbers are such they will support their own races. It's not easy including SUP, as it puts more pressure on the support boat ratio due to the slower moving craft.

I see a future where there are combined and separate races for all ocean paddlers with some people crossing between the different disciplines. There is so much SUP can learn from Outrigger paddlers ( just look at Trav Grant, Danny Ching, Danny and Sue Sheard etc) and SUP gives outriggers another way to enjoy paddling and the ocean.

I come from an outrigger background myself and when SuP first hit Aussie shores, I never thought Downwind on a SuP would ever take off, thinking more that the surfing SUP would be the focus. But how quickly has the equipment developed and evolved in such a short time? It's amazing the number of different SUP boards and designs there are.

SUP has a huge future as a downwind ocean sport/lifestyle, it just needs time to develop safe, dedicated races of it's own and learn from the mistakes outrigger racing and windsurfing made over the years and also take on board all the things they got right.

Keep your heads and hearts open guys, SUP has a long way to go.

Hi DW

What you have to remember is that most of these races, like the KOTC, are primarily Ski or OC1 races and SUP categories were only added because people wanted to do these races but on their SUPs.

The entry fee for the KOTC is only $50, and you get "... XCEL race top, giftbag by GU, tickets into random draw prizes and entertainment." Which is pretty much the same as the Xcel Race on the Goldie in late May. And some of the money goes to charity.

As you know, I been and raced in Hawaii a couple of times, and I must say the racing is great, the after race food/entertainment is great but... its not cheap. And out of all the years I've raced there, I only won $200 prize money once.

So $50 race entry and half a tank of fuel is a small price to pay to have just as much fun right in my own backyard.

Just remember DW its not about the money, its about the STOKE

Hi Dean and Rambo
I agree with what you're saying but strongly disagree as well and I'm not going to argue as it's an insult to argue over these Downwind races in Australia. SUP's are rated as second class paddlers at these Australian events there'd be a few SUPers that would agree with me on this but it doesn't matter fighting a loosing battle on this one.
I get a STOKE with every Downwind paddle see ya in the ocean

Everyone rants and raves about not enough prize money, too expensive or the wind is not at your ass!

If you want to support SUP and see it progress to bigger and better heights, just support it no matter what it is. Isn't that what it is all about?

I can appreciate that it's tough as I have done many on my OC1, Ski and SUP up wind in race and training. But if you want to see the sport move forward, I'm a big believer of participation support.

You can't predict the weather but you can predict a big future in SUP with support.

you know in an ideal world, you would turn up to these races with a oc1 and a sup, then make a call. last year's 'king' was my first oc1 race.

the mail is a lot are going to do the nationals long course on a oc1 and sup the short course.

I will be up there supporting the King of the coast race regardless of conditions.

I can tell you after paddling the 11 cities tour 220km and most of it into straight of side 30knot winds, the king of the coast will be fun.

I should have the trailer going up with a heap of roar crew heading up to do this race.

Just got in off ocean run with Jonesy,Al & Ryan. Testing conditions with chop and side on easterly wind. It'll be hard, but worth it.
Best part was having whales pop up right next to us and seeing others breaching.
Looking forward to paddling with the Goldie crew.

Great to see the Goldie crew getting behind a great event that raises money for a good cause..

PS. my paddling to the back of the field has nothing to do with age or fitness level.... just think you get a better view of the race from there

Two years ago the 12'6" did a shorter course from Mudjimba to Mooloolaba. They started at the same time as the Unlimited and came into the finish at the same time. If 12'6" do want to do the whole course that all other craft are paddling then they may need to start a little earlier. This maybe where I come into it and start that race with a different stop watch ? We want most paddlers in and finished in time for presentations, auctions and raffle draws not still paddling !!

What's the general consensus from those 12'6" who are actually planning on entering the race ?

Regarding the jetty's in the Mooloolah River...I'm sure that you can paddle through the first rows of moored boats on the corner but then have to go around all of the structured jetty's where prawn trawlers are moored. The Race Director will address this at the official race briefing.

All competitors must wear a leg rope and have on them (wearing, waist,on craft) a PFD (personal floatation device).
