Here's a short vid that I took yesterday while Jonathan was off paddling my Javelin.. It's his new Starboard 12'6" Surf Race.

The nose looks a bit like a Dutch Clog.. .. but it is fast.. very fast..

First time I've seen a handle attached to the side of the board!..... does it get in the way while your paddling

Did the starfish prefer the Surf Race or the Javelin?

How far out of the water is the deck drain hole when your standing on the board? Surprised to see that - looks like a design oversight.

I also don't understand the love every one has with swept fins on racing boards - Naish got it right with the elliptical fin/foil on the Javelin in my opinion (I would have gone a bit deeper though)

Handle is for launching in races I guess, it came with 2 but I only put one on - strangely doesn't get in the way at all when paddling. The thing is actually light and narrow enough to be very easy to carry by just hooking your fingers around the edge of the sunken deck, then if its windy I just grab the handle with the other hand holding my paddle to stabilise it - having the handle makes that easy to do and makes you feel that little bit more secure in 25+ knots.

The drain holes are out of the water when you stand, normally your feet are completely dry but if a wave does swamp over the water just pisses out like having a hose on each side - they work very well.

Swept back fin is not standard although I think the Bamboo race fin that comes with the boards (mine is on its way) is actually quite swept back. I like the swept back fin, makes the board more manoeuvrable, for me this board is all about downwind not flat water racing.

PTWoody are you crazy, do you think DJ would put a starfish on his new Javelin

Funny all this fin stuff, I'd bet most people paddling on flat water wouldn't be able to tell what sort of fin was under this board or the Javelin if they just got on without seeing it first.

My understanding is that it is called the Surf Race because it is made for races that enter and exit the surf zone, with a turnpoint inside.

My question is, how does it handle the waves? Mainly on the way in and m More in terms of catching waves up to a reasonable size and riding close out beach breaks rather than shredding green faces.

I thought the same as Gorgo. Its a speed/distance board with enough surfability to get through breakers. But I very much look forward to your first downwinder report Jonathan.

Thanks for the photos DJ. The brushed carbon paint job looks much better IRL than I thought it would.

I also question the Canuk.

I've always found that at lower board speeds like on SUP's (compared to windsurfers) a longer chord will provide better directional stability. The result is an increase in lateral resistance which reduces paddle steering (less changing sides). This is almost always an advantage in SUP as long as the foil stays nice and efficient without too much drag.

Sam.

Don't really know yet, but if the runners i have been on so far are any indication - very well! It will bottom turn easily and trim onto the wave face easily and securely. As soon as I get onto bigger stuff with it I'll let you know. I'm going to be very careful in anything that is super heavy and beach breaky - could become very expensive very fast

I'm very interested to know what is a better all round board for paddling in Port Phillip Bay, The Surf Race or the Glide 14' DW?

Surf Race would seem better for flat water with the Glide excelling in the bigger DW conditions? Or could the Surf Race hold its own in bigger Downwinders?

In typically flat and small chop you get around ST Kilda the Surf Race would seem to be better yes?

My theory is that a swept fin with large(ish) swept tip creates more drag than a fin with a resonable cord without swept tip hanging off the bottom of it and there for "should" be quicker. You can keep the cord length through the foil I just don't think its required to have a swept tip with a large swept tip area on a racing/fw fin.

I think there's a compromise some where in the middle that will provide the best of both worlds. What that is I don't know, but I'm keen to find out . I'd think something similar to the Maui Ultra Fins SUP race with 10° less rake and a little more cord would be pretty cool though, having said that I've only seen them on-line

Jonathan's not had it on a good down-winder yet.. It's not a down wind board so it will be interesting to see how it goes against real down wind boards.

Jonathan thinks it will be very good.. We'll see.. We have had one down wind run in very light winds and it certainly went very well in those conditions.

Took my Surf Race out last week in really bad conditions, gusting up to 25 knots, raining, choppy. We have a local breakwater and its possible to get behind the wall for some shelter then come out into the exposed wind waves at the end of the wall, pretty much going off yesterday with 5 or 6' foot faces but super choppy with reflection off the rock wall.

Well once again the Surf Race amazed me, the thing is just so incredibly stable in such a wild sea state, I actually think it is not only the sunken deck it's the whole shape of the board that just makes it so forgiving in chop.

So work my way out into the maelstrom turn it down a face and suddenly it's all sunshine and light as the board gets straight onto the wave, it really does surf surprisingly well. A normal surf board in those conditions would have been really difficult with the regular nose getting slapped around by the chop. did my little laps of back upwind along the wall and into the waves for about an hour and a half and didn't fall off once, not only incredibly stable for a 26 1/2" wide board, just incredibly stable - period.

The Surf Race is my new best friend and I'm sure it will just rip in proper downwind conditions.

we got a look at a normal glass one at the supsa flatwater race day. the board looks the goods, but were all mostly a little disappointed with how it paddled in the flats up against the javelin,dc's, secret agent and lahuikai - a lot of water spraying off the nose and that seemed to be the problem. it just didn't appear to have out and out speed. stability is pretty good. however, i personally get the feeling in the ocean/ surf it's true character would come out.
sb look to have a range of boards suiting different formats- make sure you are getting the board for you, don't get on ' the surf' band wagon without looking at their other boards
cheers

Yes by the looks of it, the Surf Race really needs some chop to come into its own and to even be an improvement on the superseded Pin. I would like to see how the New works in flat water. That's supposed to be the real rocket ship.

Good point Lacey, have to agree, it really doesn't come into its own on flat water. It's fast but probably about the same as the Pin but the stability in really rough stuff is fantastic - lets you concentrate on putting the power down and catching swells. Maybe also a factor of me being so light, I don't know. I'm not really into racing, just enjoy going for a blast with mates and having fun and it really fits the bill for me.

yeah, being able to put it in when paddling and less balance work is a big factor. i imagine it would be pretty good going up wind and a lot of times that happens
