It really has been interesting watching the whole evolution of the sport in general.
By no means am I claiming anything but just as a point of reference here I started surfing SUP in around the start of 2007. That means nothing except at that time people pointed and laughed, your mates castigated you and when you seen other people at the Alley you rushed out to share this new thing with them. You were having so much fun what others thought didnt mean anything. Still don't.....
I distinctly remember being at Tully St Johns for work and those guys seemed a little more advanced with maneuvers. They gave me tips on how to use the paddle and I came home and shared them with now pro's and we would practice them and hoot if someone actually turned a bit.
New people come all of the time. Such a great sport of course everyone would get into it. Then the ocean thing, racing, people getting sponsored, hobbies became business and before you know it friends became enemies.
A small community got bigger and people outside of it claiming rights and judgement. Most recycled surfer types started to get away from crap, just to enjoy the pure joy of riding a big board on waves others couldn't. Just for fun, not competition.
Now, it's going every direction. I still love it but I feel lucky that I got to experience somewhere near the start.
Just remember, we all started for fun. If that's your goal and are happy to let others enjoy what you love, point people in the right direction, hoot at their success we can keep this good thing longer.
Love you guys!
