Aussies (and Brits) take their sports organizations way more seriously than they do in the U.S. (Seems like the Brits will organize a legitimate club for just about anything.) You have big participation, better professionalism, and therefore local governments seem to take you a bit more seriously.
I was lucky enough to represent the UK in Peru 2012... The UK Stand Up Paddle association gave us $75.00 each as a contribution. so the team ( 4 of us) went out and generated sponsorship..and raised £4,000, enough to cover the flights and accommodation. We rented a cheap car, stayed in a modest hotel and did it in an affordable way.
Last year the USA team had a mini van for the athletes, a supporting truck for their boards a coach, manager etc etc... .
I reckon people are missing the point about Peru, there are loads of events with and without prize money, all of them are individual events. There is something special about competing when your team mates are waving the respective country flag and cheering you on, no matter whether its in last position or your coming first.
The ISA in Peru had an atmosphere that I am guessing is similar to the Olympics, hence why sports people like tennis players, basketball players who earn a **** load of money, go in the Olympics..... The opening parade, the closing ceremony and party, the friendships with other athletes and the once in a lifetime opportunity to represent your country.
What that worth...????
