Hi all,

Well it's been run and won! What a race, with the wind sideon all the way about 10 to 15knots.
Everyone will be supporting a very sore shoulder.

The swell was very small and not many runners to be had.

There was a heap of divisons, so i will give you what i can remember.

Unlimited Opens Mens Sup
1st James Billy Watson 17ft
2nd Paul Jackson 17ft
3rd Kelly Margets 16ft

Stock Open Mens Sup
1st Woogie
2nd ,not sure on their name
3rd , "

Womens umlimited Sup
1st Shaikra 14ft
2nd Sue 16ft
3rd Jasleigh 12'6

That's all i can remember. Event was a heap of fun even if you were on 12ft or under.

Sure was fun! What a relief to paddle into the creek and finally put a few in on the left hand side! Next year they gotta look at a new division for 40 years and older stock boards. Must've been easy as many over 40s on stock boards as there was over 40s on unlimited.

Good work to all who participated, from watching you guys come through the Alley it certainly looked like hard work.

I am assuming Jacko passed Kelly in the creek, so bit effort, certainly looked like taking a wider line into the creek paid off well also.

Yeah 2nd again, starting to get used to that feeling.
Billy paddled hard the whole way like a machine and with his new board he was untouchable on the day, me and Kelly had a really good race and it was a photo finish at the end, must have been at least 1 to 2 inch's in it.

Would have been nice for the wind to come up a bit better and a better direction but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

I have a fast 17ft board now for sale if anyone is interested at a good price just PM me if anyone's keen.

Good day, Good race, and really good to see the number of paddlers growing every year and good to see guys like Luke Egan there have ago as well.

Yer Casso...I like details !! Danny didn't enter due to illness and injury all rolled up into one. Travis Grant did enter in the OC1 (outrigger) division winning the Open Mens Outrigger in 57.07 mins making him 3rd overall across the line out of 116 total competitors. (SUP's, OC1 and Paddleboard)

Jaimi Mitchell was first overall competitor across the line on a lie down paddleboard in a time of 51.48 mins. That guy is amazing !!

I was at the finish when Paul & Kelly were fighting it out - it was even before the turn buoy which was set out about 50 m from the beach.

Kelly was wash riding the paddle boarder that you can see in the photo and Paul was wash riding Kelly - Paul got the inside line on the turn and I think that was the big difference. They ended up sandwiching the Paddle boarder on the turn (Poor Guy).

About two board lengths out from the beach you could see the determination of both paddlers wanting to win this thing.

Kelly jumped off and tried to run on water but Paul stay on the board which give him that edge. Kelly did a superman dive to get to the beach but the clock was stopped when the boards hit the beach.

I have a camera but I forgot to use it as it was one exciting finish.

Hey Woogie, what's the go with that paddle in the pics?. It looks super short....... Here was me thinking for downwinders (or in Sat's case, cross-winders) you need something 8-10" longer than your height and that thing of yours looks 10" SHORTER. Would be interested in your theories on shaft length, blade size etc for maximum speed and efficiency when racing (or from anyone who's got the goods on paddle dynamics). I figure when the engine is as ****house as mine you need all the help you can get....Thanks - what a great day Sat was, can only see it getting bigger every year. Thanks to all involved in organising a first class event with a great vibe.

Hey Jed

A shorter shaft allows you to increase your Stroke rate quicker when chasing bumps - you just got to remember not to sacrifice good fundamentals of good SUP technique. A longer shaft tends to put more pressure on your body due to the increase in leverage which is not a good thing when chasing bumps.

That paddle in the weekend actually felt a bit long - it is 2" longer than what I normally use.

It is all about CORRECT TECHNIQUE!!!!!! which unfortunately was lacking in alot of the paddlers in the weekend - not a dig but an observation. It is great to see you are chasing information to improve yourself - SUP is a fast growing sport and there are alot of self appointed experts which are keeping the massage therapist in business.

Thanks for the story and photos, almost feel like I was there. great to see the variety of craft.
Kiakaha, If you have any thoughts on technique that can keep me out of the physio I would like to hear or see them.
Anyone got video of good solid long distance technique

This was done at the end of last year before the Seaway to Seaway race - it is a 18'9 with no steering system so you can actually see Woogie doing correction strokes.

Thanks for posting that vid Jodie.. It's a beauty.. and it does show great technique (imo).. Shame we've now lost that great music that was on it originally.

Are the correction strokes where Woogie drags the paddle forward?

I'm not picking but I also notice Woogie changes his stroke technique sometimes from a nice up/down movement of the top hand using the lower to bring the paddle forward to a slight swinging top hand using the top hand to bring the paddle forward.

We'd love to see more vids like this showing Woogie paddling if that's poss..

Hey DJ - when Woogie drag the paddle it is more for balance or he is just feeling what the board is going to do next - he might be on a run so is in the relax mode.

As for the two different types of returns this is very common -

When pushing into the wind you want to use the swing style as it help prevent resistance with the paddle into the wind - this is also see as the Tahitian or Hawaiian style of stroke.

When he is about the push into a bump you will see the more up and down pendulum movement as he needs to increase his stroke rate to get into that bump.

I will write something up with more details and photos and send it to you.

Col & Annie are coming down to the OG day both of them have watch and learnt from Woogie

good bit of info there.... thanks,

there would have to be differences from person to person, as different body types will dictate. height vs reach would be a main factor i would have thought???

so other than that vid, where else can we get the correct info on paddle technique? i dont really want to form bad habbits....(probably already have)

cheers, Serg
