surfed there at lunch yesterday and the day before - didn't bring the board today.....

Almost sounds like he stepped on a Wobbagong (there are a couple that hang out in the rocks around the basin) if it was for the Surfwatch guys view of it.

Hope he heals quickly.

Just to play the devils advocate..."Stepped on Wobbegong" doesnt sound as good as "Great White attacks from underneath"

"The victim has signed an exclusive deal with Channel Nine, a NSW Health spokeswoman said. "

The Surfwatch guy didnt actually see the shark, he saw "a bit of the tail". Somethings obviously happened out there but lets see where this goes.

It's in the best interest of the Surfwatch guy to create hysteria - more work for his business.

Pretty weird that the "teeth" marks are only on one side of his leg!

I know first hand that the barnacles on the rocks at the Basin are very sharp.

Looking at the picture of his leg looks more like a kiss from a woobygong than a gouge from a great white!

How funny is the bit about the Discovery crew filming a doco on sharks at the same time? The presenter would've been talking about sharks whilst a guy in the background was fighting one off!!

The media are catching on that it was just a hoax: www.abc.net.au/news/2010-02-11/investigation-launched-into-sydney-shark-attack/327710

Yeah, I was out there on the 12' Gun - for extra stability so I'd spend less time in the water. Watch the news tonight - there were heaps of film crews on the beach and choppers overhead while I was out there. Did a couple of interviews when I came in - hopefully they got my APS sticker on my paddle in frame (I was trying hard).

good job, what i am wondering is that it is so shallow out there near the rocks. So if could hold onto a rock while it was attacking him, how come the thing did not beach itself.
unless he was holding a rock underwater..

2 things.

1. Must have been a very small shark with a jaw circumference like that.

2. If you look at the photo below (wobbegong jaw) You can see that the shape of the bite is fairly familiar.

I'm calling bulls#$t on the GWS.

The one of the leg is the photo I took-there are bite marks on BOTH sides of the leg. The marks on the other side were distinctive puncture marks.

For the record-I reckon it was probably a Wobby too.

Tail of a Wobbagong is pretty different from a GWS - though I guess it depends on how much of the "tail" he saw

From the ABC article,

"Mr Brown said he believed the animal was a two-metre-long great white shark.

As the director of SurfWatch Australia, an organisation that patrols for sharks and charges people for helicopter joyrides, Mr Brown has been agitating against the State Government for greater protections against sharks.

After three attacks in Sydney last year, he accused the Government of ignoring an email that had warned of a sharp increase in shark numbers"

Sounds to me like this guy is just like that old tool Vic Hislop. People who use the publics fear of sharks to stir up media for their own misguided gains. Best protection against sharks is to stay out of the water, otherwise you take your chances.

How terribly sad it would be if this was a hoax and Channel Nine had just thrown a wad of cash at this bloke for exclusive rights to nothing.

For a self proclaimed shark expert to confuse a Great White for a Wobbegong... doesn't do a lot for credibility does it? And I'm tipping his email to Government warning of a shark epidemic will continue to be ignored following this episode.

I can only hope that the guys that spear fish that area don't start taking Wobbie's because of this.

Edit - or anyone else for that matter

Remember the guy was probably in some sort of shock after something latched onto his leg [}:)]

Agree with you Mac. Must have been horrendous for his son. Wobbies can give you a real nasty injury if provoked or startled.

I don't know what the going rate is for selling a story, I guess it depends on the importance/ headlines the media will attract viewers to the story, maybe the guy needs a new car to carry the new sup on or needs a good old holiday for the family or maybe he was just in shock, anyway he has a story to tell at the weekend BBQ and a good one at that
