This vid is in the billabong xl awards -
the SUp dude dropping in just gives the surfers ammunition for bad thoughts about us

Seems to be an accepted thing at mavs, waimea and jaws as they tend to go pretty straight. Do not think this will change anyone's view.

First on does not matter, closest to the peak is more important.

I'm pretty sure he was going left until she dropped in on him.

Seriously, its common practice in this size surf to share waves, i don't see it as an issue in this case.

He was already committed. Ive never surfed waves even close to that size. Can you pull out of a wave like that when already comitted? AND if you do manage, arent yo going to be in a prime position to be clobbered by the next one?

"First on does not matter, closest to the peak is more important."

Dont fully agree with the view that closest to the peak is more important. All this will do is drive SUPs deeper into the line up and potentially create safety issues with some of the shortboard/mal crew sitting inside. Within in reason if someone is on and up riding then taking off further in but deeper doesn't get ride of way. Can be a fine line as per the video.

I'm sure this might have a full range of views and is rarely black and white.

sorry mate have to disagree, that short of stuff you sayng just causes fights and agro in the water, sups and mals have enough of an advantage over short boarders with their long run ups

Been discussed heaps before and consensus is surfing rules are followed. Closest to the steepest most critical part of the wave has right of way. Paddling onto the shoulder is wrong. If you cannot safely compete for waves move to a different break. The surfers rules have been around for a long time just because you are on a sup does not change anything.

Hi Hilly and Matt

I've obviously missed some of the previous discussion. 1 scenario that gets me wound up is when someone has caught a wave (on any type of craft) and has been riding for let say 30+m and because it might be a point break with a few sections and reforms then someone takes off deeper further down the line but deeper as it reforms. In this type of situation I say who's on first gets ride of way and its not too uncommon at some of the point breaks here in QLD.

Also have some concern regarding SUPs venturing deeper into the line up (even with competency factored in). Its inevitable that sooner or later we're all going to get caught by a sneeker set and even the most competent SUP rider on the face of this earth will pose some risk to others in the vicinity. You only have to look at some of the previous threads on legropes to know that there is a reasonable amount of breakages. Perhaps its as black and white as any conditions with any consequence should not have a SUP in the water amongst others.

Anyhow gents thats my 2c worth and I'll get down from my soap box

Cheers

Agree with you Herbert.

At a couple of places I surf I have had this situation occur. And it isn't a question of taking off on the shoulder...if you have done a bottom turn and then cutback into the breaking section (without anyone on the wave) and then, lo and behold, when you are about to do another cutback...at least 30+ metres if from where you took off....there is a shortboard there. In that case, I figure it's my wave.

I should also say that, looking at the vid, the SUP definitely dropped in.

Whether it ultimately caused a problem on that wave is, perhaps, open to discussion, but he did drop in.

How do you tell where the peak is? Is that the first part of the wave to break?

Agree on a beach break still have to pull off on a point break unless you can pick up speed and get way way down the line

Cheers

hahaha it will always "look" like the sup is catching the wave first.....they are already standing.....if you watch that vid, he was only just on it a touch more than her and only becasuse of SUP.....she had the right of way.

If you cant control your board to get into priority, dont go out there.....or wait were you are comfortable and only go when its not a drop in, BUT you may have to wait a long time for few waves.

Let's tottally crucify him like that Maxiarse dude did to me on my first post on this forum; armchair, or should we say computer chair commentators rule!

I suppose he is just lucky that she did not fall off and die like Mark Foo? (No disrespect whatsoever intended to Mark Foo). [}:)]

there is no issue here. both committed, both took off. as said- it happens all time in seriously big waves. just because he was on a sup is no reason to single him out.

he also knows what he is doing.

"[t]issues" baby "[t]issues"',

they were going to hand them out to this kook body boarder whose head I carved over on my SUP a few days back when he decided to call me off a wave when there was heaps enough room for us both. I don't know why, but that one had all the ordinary surfers pissing themselves laughing. If only I had the footage!

Then realistically, how many times do you see more than one person taking off on these kind of waves; fairly commonplace? Likewise, most people would have just dissmissed the wave all togather as a chick and one of those pestery SUPs scrapping for a go? Only difference in this case is that the chick is sponsored and someone was filming?
