Been away and just catching up on the forum.

This thread is silly.

One thing I really noticed about surfing and SUP in other countries is that people do not take it all so seriously that it destroys the fun. Sometimes I think we get it wrong in that way.

yes, but at least we've worked out that keeping away to the side is good for the tanker wave riding freaks

Point Henry Corio bay does have a wave generated by passing ships that can be ridden by sup.
Having kiteboarded & sailboarded flat water there for many years its always been a novelty when you see a large fully laden ship who's skipper is in a hurry...
Being on a fast moving kite board you can line yourself up in the safe shallows of the point to the general area the wave will break, there is no need to go anywhere near the ship or shipping channel as the water is too deep for a ridable wave anyway.
Obviously the waves shape is governed by ships displacement speed, tide & direction of travel, in or out of port, at times it can often be more like a mini tsunami than an ocean swell, as the water tends to drain off the shallow point followed by the ships wake in the form of a wave...or two, about waist high, its not really a nice peeling wave, but rather a foamy closeout.
The wave can be ridden for a few hundred meters at best.
If you want to ride it on a sup.... look up port movements for the day, & observe where the wave is breaking on a ships passing.....go hang around....may be a while though... as traffic in corio bay is nothing like port philip
Just a word of caution....the wave can suck dry....sending you into the mud.....you will be likely to come up with a face full of sea urchins

heheh.....good luck

ps....DJ....here is a good expedition idea for you ....take your gopro & document it for everyone.
you can even make it an interesting trip by taking a short cut getting there by paddling from north side of corio bay at the end of avalon rd

^^^ Or...if there's any West in it - you could start at 'Seabreeze Pde' near the Incitec plant. (just googled the bay & found it).

Seriously though...would you leave your car parked in Corio for an hour or so?

hey guys if you want to do it safely heres how. You need a zodiak or jet ski
Go out to the mud island side of the channel stay well clear of the channel maybe 100m towards mud island. When the oil rig barge (the big orange one with the flat back) goes past you get solid 2-3 ft waves all the way thru the shallows at mud island. If you fall off you can just stand up or catch another if youre quick. Only 4-5 waves in a set but it can be really clean and safe. Watch out for sharks in summer!!!!!

hahah... sorry didnt mean to start a heated topic... no i thought about suping along behing tanker but i respect port phillip bay too much to do that... too many things can go wrong too quickly in the channel and the shipping traffic prob too busy...

delayed swells to shallower water is what im after and thanks for the response ppl....

enjoy the water

Right of Rosebud pier. This is about the closest point to where the ships then turn north to head to the city.
As a kid we used go there with sit down paddle boards and catch small waves. Once the ship turned we would give it 5 minutes and get ready for about 5 swells to come.
I've seen it happen at South beach, Mount Martha.
But it is all a few and far between not to mention unpredictable.
