In a southerly, it heads more towards shore, so we go out wide about 2km out, then turn down wind. In the really strong SW, the runners are so good just from the wind, I only need to paddle around the pier before I turn straight for Point Leo. About 1km into the paddle, the swell starts to hit and you can get some cross chop, but most of the time it's all good. Any tide when the wind is strong.
If you are really up for a challenge when its southly, or SE, we can paddle out to the pilot bouy which is about 3 to 4km off shore, and then you paddle straight to Point Leo or go from the bottom carpark at Mushroom reef and paddle around West Head, and then go down the bay.
