For the past coupla weeks, I've been riding Dan's personal 8'6. I've been going through the adaptation process all over again. Burning thighs, falling in. Every time I have progressed from my first 10' Laird SUP, then to rockered 9'3 Naish, to 8'5 Coreban, to 8'6 PSHs... same thing. I burned, fell off, but adapted. My surfing got better, which for an old shortboarder, I am stoked about. Now on Dan's demo- narrowish, with generous rocker & concave- I am getting stoked yet again.
Persevere, get your confidence up, and get that quiet, warm smile on your face as you come out of the surf.
