Hi y'all,
5 sessions on this beast so far, still trying to find some decent juice to get this thing cranking. Suffering new board curse (new board = no waves).
My initial thoughts........
Beautifully finished as all deep boards are. Tough. Nothing to scratch.
Heeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaavvvvvvvvy. Keeping in mind that I have been thrashing my minion, and this is what I am comparing it to. I thought the same when I went back to my Nalu from the minion. I'll weigh this big boy one day. Maybe. Maybe I'd rather not know. If I wasn't so hard on the gear, I would have gone the lighter construction. But I am, so I didn't.
More stable than my 10' Laird surfer was, probably due to the wider tail. Not as corky as my 10'6" Nalu, I'm guessing the 20 litres less volume has something to do with this. The chaser is quite stable, but mine at 29' wide can be a handful in a choppy onshore. Especially side on to the lumps. I'm still finding the sweet spots, and found on my last session that standing further forward in sloppy crap does help. I was really having fun. Then had to go back to work. Pffffft.
Paddling out is a breeze. The ease of ploughing the nose through oncoming waves and white wash was appreciated. Just enough rocker. Not too much.
On the couple of decent waves that I managed to find, this thing is a f'n freight train. I kid you not. It has awesome glide. I wouldn't be purchasing it as a beginner and taking it out adjacent to your local flagged area. You may get run out of town.
I am readjusting to the big board. Taking one step back on the minion and driving it back up the face of a wave is a whole different kettle of fish to taking a packed lunch to make your way down the back of the chaser. When you do make it there though it is worth it. The big arcing turn at speed is exhilarating, something I've been missing. I tried it initially as a quad, and have it currently set up as a thruster. I'm leaning marginally towards 3 fins at the moment. At least until I am in tune with it.
All in all, a welcome addition to my board rack. I can see some real fun ahead, and will make sure to share it with you.
My eldest considers himself a budding photographer, if only I could get him out of bed.....
Cheers.
