Hi all,

Looking through old photos.

Thought they were worth showing.

Black and white photo is on Sydney harbour in the late 50's taken by dad, mum reckons 1956 start of S2H? I am unsure though.

The first two are KA-1, Gretel, Australia's 1962 America's cup challenger.

Yeah, No worries Cisco, I need to go through the albums and scan etc. I'll find some old classics for ya.

This is excellent mate. What you are effectively doing is preserving these shots forever.

I have a photo of the start of the 1969 Freo to Gero race but it is in pdf format and so won't post here.

You can copy the photo "out" from the PDF document and paste it into an image program and do a "Save As" and save it as JPG or any other format that the program supports.

It took me a few weeks to dig these pics out of my locker!
Taken in Sydney harbour of the same Halvorsen yacht.
1st pic is between 1926 to 1955 , 2nd is in the early 70s ,3rd 2010 still going strong !

Looking at the last photo from Stone, nothing has changed, other than the clothing, they were piss heads back then as we are today...?

At least the blokes wearing shorts are normal shorts. Hard to buy these days. Hate the sight of shorts that cover the knee!

This is one of my favourite photos.
Apparently "Onawind" is the sister "Theleme". Onawind sailed out of Freshwater bay yacht club in perth. Dad always preferd her set up and thought she was the better boat out of the two.

How do two yachts/ships become known as "sister ships". Is it just they were made by the same guy at the same time?

Curious why both yachts in the photo have the genoa up with the kite? Don't see that these days?

Judging by the sheeting positions for the headsails, the headsails are more like No2's and a much better balanced rig than IOR style rigs.

I have a staysail that is flown under a spinnaker, The clew reaches back to the cockpit.
Looks like the sails are working well in that photo. Fashion is very important in yacht rigs, the rules or more importantly the loopholes is what governs rigs. Bring back Bloopers I say.

the spinnaker / headsail combo is evident in a couple of the previous posts too. On a short broad reach in around the cans racing on the S&S 34 we sometimes leave the headsail up if the kite is setting nicely, saves a bit of time at the next mark(maybe we're just lazy) - on a tight reach or going square the combo won't generally be efficient.

Any idea who the boat is behind 'Onawind' in that last shot? Looks like a Royal Perth boat (R161?) - not another one of those S&S's is it?

Awesome shot of Pilgirm with that blooper up -another classic S&S design!

Beautiful boat, I did the 09 Hobart on her (Perie Banou 2) and she was fantastic.

I did the 96 (I think) Hobart on Mark Twain and we beat Perie by a couple of hours from memory.

I loved sailing Kitty Kats, being catapulted around the frount when the noise dug in and the speed, wow. Thanks for the memory.

Funny u should say that Hellfire, my dad always talks about the crew getting wrapped around the forestay and has a bit of a chuckle too! His other favourite story from Kitty Cat days also involves the bows nosediving while surfing downwind, the front x-beam snapping and the cat becoming two monohulls! Bit of a mess...but the cat lived on to purr another day...

Friend of mine owns and races a trimaran. He has just bought an old Kittycat to muck about on. Ran in to him the other day as he was leaving Bunnings after buying more sheets of plywood. Hell of a lot of plywood in a Kittycat with that tramp/platform set up and rot a bit of a problem after all these years. Also an enormous centreboard. He reckons its a heap of fun though. He raced an A class and a Nacra so is well versed on cat sailing.

An impulse buy from Vinnies in Windsor; 'Ocean Sailing' by Robert James 1980 had this photo fall out...

Trimaran beneath Barrenjoey. On the back it reads " 'The Frog' 15-8-87 "

Hey whiteout, the spot where the Success is depicted as about to be launched from is now a designated swimming area.
The next slipway N is a designated kayak landing place. Had paddled over there last Saturday from Putney - many buildings have absolutely nothing in them at all.

I felt like naughty kid wandering through an abandoned industrial area.
