I think vertical winches are a whole lot better especially on a smaller yacht. They take up a lot less deck space and if you are having an electric one the motor and gear box will be more protected below deck.

For a smaller yacht (up to 35 foot) I also think that electric winches are overkill. I have a Muir VMH 500 manual winch that I will be fitting to Second Wind, not so much for mechanical advantage but so I do not have to handle muddy chain.

These little jiggers are small, simple and economical at about $1,000. I got mine off ebay for $250.

Hi all

I guess that the only problem with having a manual winch is you have to be up at the bow to operate it wheras with a electric i assume you would have a switch in the cockpit that would make retrieving the anchor easier when you are sailing alone

I haven't either so I am only guessing here

With the chain locker in the bow where the anchor chain drops in to , what happens if the chain is muddy

Does the mud end up inside the chain locker and is the locker open to the interior of the boat

I have well over 450 mm drop to the top of the anchor chain pile inside the bow of the boat.

I don't think the fall of the chain into your locker will be an issue as long as you can get at it easily enough from inside the boat. The 450 mm drop is plenty of space for the chain to sort itself. As soon as you go onto a port tack the pile is going to fall over to the middle.

I think putting a guide pipe below deck is going to foul things up.

You do not have a lot of deck space to play with because of your bow sprit. You could mount a Muir VMH 500 on top of your sprit and drop the chain down a hawser beside it to keep the drop closer to midships.

if your going to be living aboard your going to need to consume as much power as possible. as you have a smaller boat your solar is limited , you can't always relie on your alternator to put all the juice back into your banks You will eventurly loose the battle!

You are carrying an anchor winch and a whole bunch of chain, I doubt whether you would notice an extra 22 kg.

Ill clean it up and re fit it makes life simple just add some new bolts

Def 8mm chain for your boat. The issue with that winch is that it is only a chain gypsy, you would need to manually change over to the rope winch if you wanted a rope/chain combo rode.

Advantages is that you have an electric rope winch to run halyards to if required.

Looking at your pics I would look at moving the large cleat to the back of the timber bowsprit and putting a horizontal winch in front of the cleat. Remembering you should never leave your winch holding your rode for long periods or in high load anchoring, you can then attach an anchor strap (forget to officoal name for one of these) to your cleat and to the chain or tie off the rope on your cleat.

I would then suggest something like 20m of 8mm chain with another 50-100m of 14mm 8 plait polyester rope behind it, like this http://www.deckhardware.com.au/-products/liros_squareline_pes_14mm
Polyester won't shrink and go tight like nylon will.
