Sean,
I have a Walt Murray design under construction in stainless steel, cedar vane and Tasmanian oak "paddle". I'm on a self steering forum, same name, check out;
cruisenews.net

Most of the stuff is scrap from my workshop and ss from metal recycler, probably cost about $50 total but the labour is fairly intensive, not hard to see why they cost so much.
Keep an eye on Ebay, they come up occasionally.

Google Walt Murray windvanes and you should find his web page. Unfortunately he is dead now but his designs live on in various manufacturers line ups.

The "Sayes" system is a trim tab self steering system. I think Sean will need a servo pendulum type to drive a Roberts 34. Check out the web pages for Aries, Cape Horn, Fleming, Monitor, Sailomat, Windpilot. There are also plenty of Utube videos of these systems in operation. Links can be found on their web pages or just search utube.

This link takes you to one of my posts on videos.

This particular video has only a partial windvane content but is one of the best Utube videos I have seen. The use of the kite is just downright clever and is a good way to show the windvane at work. Obviously only effective while close hauled.

Hi Everyone!

Just to add my penny's worth, i am also looking for a used wind vane for my multi chine Van de Stadt 34. I am currently in coffs Harbour (heading north in about 3 weeks), but quite happy to rent a car and pick up anywhere in NSW or QLD

All suggestions gratefully received!

Hi Shaun,

Thanks for that. Didn't get the message at all! I am now in Iluka (mouth of the Clarence). I have just put my clumsy size 10 foot through the ram of the autopilot at full extension and completely bananared it! I am told that a replacement will cost 850 bucks! so budget a bit stretched for now. Although I agree with Cisco that your wind vane would be pretty perfect for me, this purchase is now going to have to wait. Don't suppose anyone has a raymarine tiller pilot ram out there? Cheers,
