And yes she is steel. I still have a bit of work to do on the rigging, replacing ropes and pulleys . I also busted a couple of battens which are in the process of being manufactured for me by the Mans Shed. I've installed a new Lowrance 7 as well then all that is left to do is get more sailing experience on her which is easier said than done as I work really long hours on Curtis Island.

The stove is a Taylor's. The previous owner installed it and it cost a motsa, can't remember how much but it works like a charm. Unfortunately a heavy handed friend did not know how it works and bust one of the burners which I'm going to have to replace.

I'm really happy with her. I spent ages and ages looking for a junk rigged boat. I'm a big fan of Annie Hill. When I was searching I had it stuck in my head that I needed a 28 to 36 footer, steel hull. One day I just entered steel hull junk rig on the search facility on yacht hub and up she came. I was going down to Brisbane that weekend to fly to a dental appointment in Thailand and popped in to Scarborough to look at her. I had a deposit on her that day!

I was really lucky I know as I have done recent searches to find out what is available in the same class and nothing doing. Also really lucky regarding paying for her as I paid cash, $23750. I cannot borrow as my last relationship left me with a bad credit rating, something I nurture! Working on the LNG projects allows one to save, no free time but plenty of lolly. only place I have ever worked where one is expected to work half as hard for nearly two and a half times the money doing the same thing in a contemporary job! Had to sell some of my soul though.We should have enough cash to leave for Fiji by June latest, ( had to have a rethink on that as my partner, my son, has been surfing and kiteboarding since April last year so our projected savings are down) where we are going to start a small kite boarding business.This is a view from the block we bought and where she will be moored.

Making up a new swing rudder. The existing blade is mild steel and rusting away. I don't like the idea of the steel blade failing and it's got no fairing either.
Sourced a Aluminium blade from ebay that's similar size with some fairing on leading and trailing edge.
Of course the new blade doesn't fit the old rudder box as it's too thick. Played around with the idea of modifying the rudder box but ended up deciding to make a new rudder box as well. Laminating up 9mm and 12mm marine ply. With some tassie oak reinforcement around the Pintle area.
Made up a template from some old core flute to check the fit of the new blade in the box. Gluing up the new box the next setp

Hey Felixdcat - just came across this forum and couldn't help but comment after seeing your Farr 740 photos. My first yacht was a 2nd hand Farr 740 Sports, which had been modified (keel fixed and faired in) for J.O.G racing. Me and my mates had an awesome time campaigning that little boat in regattas from Port Stephens to Botany Bay. Great fun surfing in a following sea, but a little light on for cruising comfort! I agree the runners take a bit of getting used to but apart from that it was a fun boat. Progressed through a Cape 31 to a Beneteau 311 to my current yacht - a Dufour 365 Grand Large which I have had for 3 years (no racing these days!).
As for "what I did to my boat today" - well, I have been getting some lifting teak on my swim platform repaired (under warranty I hope!) by the Dufour dealer in Pittwater. The boat was then picked up by a nearby marine electrics company to have a new battery and tank monitor fitted. On completing the job, the marine electricians rang me to let me know I could pick the boat up tomorrow, and ended the phone call with "by the way, is there any reason your swim ladder is lying on the boat and not bolted to the swim platform?". And I specifically asked the dealer if he had checked the teak work and was happy with it. Unbelievable.

I'm off tomorrow on a 3 week cruise to Asia, real cruise on a cruise ship, only way to travel.

Yesterday I sat around on the bottom checking out my mooring to make sure my pride and joy is there when I get back. Mooring is the usual rope riser and chain on the bottom to the weight. Replaced the shackle to the swivel during the winter and moused with a heavy duty electrical tie, its in immaculate condition. Bottom shackle to the weight is the original placed there by the mooring contractor and moused with SS wire. The pin rotates and there is some degradation from electrolysis but will be fine for a month or so. I will replace it while the water is still warm. If only we could convert marine contractors to electrical ties instead of SS wire!

I have a newish block and apparatus (9 months old) and was thinking of getting it checked out. Does anyone know of a good contractor to do that. I don't really know what sort of job they did in the first instance, guess you just need to trust their work.

Very jealous Tab. What type of boat are you sailing ?

Sunday removed
the Table ,
fitted the Main and Mizzen Booms
Removed the Metho pressure stove and brought it home to renovate find some quad rings and o rings to suit the stove pressure system and clean it
Started on the raw water cooling system drained it and left vinegar inside the engine for the week brought the thermostat housing home to make new gaskets and get a few o rings and also clean her up brought all the sails home two rowing trips to the car

Replaced traveler control lines. old ones were about 3mm now 6mm. Bit easier on the hands.New family member,welcomed RL28 Pinnaroo to the family on sat. Many pleasurable hours of pottering to look forward to, to get her to where I am as one!!

I have been away for a month so had a mate go onboard once while I was away to clean out the rain water and run the engine.
I went up to her today for the first time and apart from a few litres of rain water in the bilge she looked to be fine. Started her up and motored up to Lion Island, about 6nm. Averaged 5.9kts in the calm water but it was a bit rough in the open ocean bit so she came back to 5.4kts. Still pretty good for an S&S34.
The boat hadn't been secured for those conditions so I turned around to get the sea off the beam. As I motored back down Pittwater the engine died. I had left the domestic fresh water pump on and a hose had come off the hot water heat exchanger and flooded the engine air filter. Remove the filter and she started again so continued the run. Did 2 hours on the motor at cruise revs, 2200rpm, and she went beautifully. Before the hose came off and put 3-4 litres of fresh water over the engine and in the bilge, the only water in the bilge was a bit of a spit from the engine header tank, I overfilled the coolant water, and a few mils from the engine heat exchanger. Nothing significant.
Cleaned the water out when I got back and she is ready to go again.
The new shaft arrangement is great. Smoother, quieter and she uses less throttle for the same speed.
Hope to get a sail in next week.
