Boooooooooo

Just been advised:

Unfortunately there will be a delay in delivering the Northshore due to a couple of issues (not with the boat!). The current plan for delivery is…

Tony will depart tomorrow (Friday) and deliver the boat ideally to Beauty Point, but more likely to St Helens looking at the forecast. Tony then has to head off to Brisbane so will hand over to John who will complete the trip. The westerlies are forecast for at least the next week which is far from ideal. John will get down to St Helens at the earliest opportunity and take the boat around to Beauty Point but it may be the first week of October before he is able to take her across the strait.

This is starting to get me down.

Mate,

all good things are worth waiting for!!!

You drew the analogy to the birth of your children many years ago. Think back to those times again and remember that, more often than not, the first one turns up way past their due date.

Exciting, hey????

Okay time for an update.

I still have not seen my boat

Combination of weather availability of skipper etc.

I have just been informed by the broker that the boat is still in St Helens but he is dropping the skipper off on Friday.

I am not too sure if the weather will hold long enough but here's hoping.

Now the guys are starting to accuse me of spinning a yarn.

How long does it take to sail from Devonport to PPB?

hi Kenif, the forecast looks like a fast kite run home if they leave Saturday. if they go non stop from st helens i'm guessing 65 hours sailing time .

you should go with them and video the downwind run home

count down to your first cup of tea in the saloon

A very good boat, well done. I looked at and still have a passing interest in a Northshore 38. However, having got the S&S34 nicely set up for single handed cruising I would have great trouble selling it now.

Just keep the faith kenif. As long as you have the boat insured your only loss situation can be the time you have put into the deal.

One thing about paid deliveries is that they often cost twice or more than you have budgeted for. If there have been no breakdowns or gear failure, consider yourself lucky.

If the boat gets weathered in somewhere you just have to cop that on the chin.

Congratulations on the purchase anyway.

Re:- Spitfire. A very good sailing mate of mine here told me a couple of days ago that he did a huge amount of osmosis repair work on that boat a few years ago.

If a boat has it that bad, it usually has it forever which would have to be the reason why it was so cheap.

There, but for the grace of God and a very fussy buyer's attitude, thou might have gone.

The Arends 33 is still a great design but had I known of that boat's problems earlier I would absolutely have let you know of them.

Many GRP boats of the early to mid 80s vintage were built using the cheap (Chinese??) resins that were around then.

Caveat emptor!! (Let the buyer beware.)

Guys

I would loved to sail her back and get to know her but I have to pay for her somehow. Even as we speak my family is in Q'cliffe on holidays whilst I'm locked in the office.

The christening process will involve some Grant Burge sparkly, followed by some sapphire G&T's and maybe finished off by a few cleansing ales. Have no fear that the boat will always be stocked with a reasonable amount of beverages to slack the thirst of a hard working crew and a clueless skipper.

The way the weather has been in Melbourne recently I still have doubts as to the weather window but you can always hope.

Cisco - close miss hey! I think people would find it very interesting that for this boat I did not survey and i did not test sail although I did have a quick look at the boat.
I placed my trust in the immaculate condition, the extensive inventory and the continous improvements and the reputation of the previous owner for being meticulous. I was also reasonably happy that she had just undergone a trip across the strait and survived.
Now this could come back to bite me but I exceeded my budget and had to make compromises. The good news is that the delivery is included in the price.

Patiently waiting.

Hi Kenif
Congrat. for new and lovely family member and welcome among Mel. sailing community. It is wise, not push delivery to hard. I waited 2 month to sail from St. Kilda to Yaringa. Only 23 footer but timing is much easier going OUT /slack water / through The Heads than coming IN from the distance.
Not an expert but window " Is it about 1 hour only? ", my guess, someone might put more light in it. I am currently in Yeppoon sailing friend's Sonata 26 N & G Keppel, back in Mel. in 2 weeks. Can't see much window for your delivery, but there would be alternative option. Get them to deliver to Hasting and than you need
"One Day Window" and couple of guys /I can help on deck too/.
Perfect experience for the skipper "YOU".
Cisco, osmosis notes, guess very interesting topic. My ex Swanson32, 45 years
in the water dozens spots but tiny, survey guy sad no need to worry another 20 years, next to me early Beneteau large bill to repair.
Believe some manufactures just cutting corners too much.

Okay next installment.

It is now 300 pm and I am a very happy
I have just seen the boat

Yep it was delivered at 100pm today.
I spoke to the delivery skipper and he had the following report:

Averaged 7.5 knots from St Helens
Left St Helens at 0830 Saturday morning
Didn't drop the pole until just outside the heads
Maxed out at 13knots surfing
Boat sailed fantastically he was very happy
Fresh waterl eak somewhere
Windows leak
Auto pilot slipping
Small hole near clew of heady

Other than that it looks great. The guy i sail with is still going over the boat and has grabbed all the documents and is more excited than i am.

Hopefully will get out tomorrow, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Very happy just need to figure out how to sail the thing.

Photo's to follow.

S&S

1300 hrs at Brighton.
I think the Skip said that he came through the heads at about 2200 last night and anchored at Mt Martha.

Motored from Mt Martha this morning.

So I make it 52 hours.

I think that your estimate was from Hobart.

Okay 1st sail!!!!

Tues afternoon wind from the north 5-10kts.
No swell and very little wave action.

Still had the number 2 on from the delivery.
In 14kts apparent boat speed in excess of 5 kts. Sweeeeet
Top speed in excess of 6 kts.
Light and responsive to the helm.

What can I say but I am in love again.

Christened with G&T's all round isn't it great to be alive.

On saturday we will pull out the number 1 and stretch our wings a little further.

Ken
