This yacht was sailed from Spain (so I am told) and is now imported to Australia with paperwork done and duty paid etc.

It is only just a ketch and not quite a yawl as the mizzen mast is only a foot or two in front of the rudder post yet it has a substantial sail area for the mizzen.

Construction is of steel (hull and deck) and of excellent quality with use of stainless steel in all the right places.

The hull form is full in the bow where most of the ballast is located and it will be very slippery in the water. The draught is moderate with a full keel at around 4.5 to 5 feet and it was originally built as a bilge keeler. The bilge keels have been removed at some stage but the flanges on each side remain with a half to an inch of the old fins (see photos).

I suggest the yacht is better without the fins (probably fitted due to the tides of the Atlantic Coast of Spain) and that at each end of the flanges a substantial stainless steel lug be welded on to accommodate legs/struts that could be pinned on to allow bottoming out without the yacht laying over. That is entirely optional.

The yacht was located at Bundaberg Slipways when the floods happened and was only flood filled due to the sounder transducer being not in place when it all happened. It did suffer some damage but not catastrophic ie it filled with water, drained and left mud behind.

It has a $10,000 paint job on it (see photos).

It needs to be made floatable (put a bung in the transducer hole) and the engine rebuilt or replaced (rebuild estimated $3000, replace $17,000). I know the current engine is rebuildable but it is a Lister-Petter and the gearbox is a CRM 310 which are expensive to repair.

I believe I can get a Hyundai 60 hp engine with a ZF gear box, all marinised for around $12,000 brand new with warranty.

So the deal is I have been given a price to own it from the current owner which is a good bargain and the yacht has to be removed from the yard before Christmas.

I am prepared to take it on, but not on my own. As the yacht has three double cabins, I am prepared to take it on in a three party syndicate as a Queensland based luxury cruising yacht.

My qualifications are that I am a Navy trained fitter and machinist, Engine Room Artificer, USL Code Marine Engine Driver Class 1, Master Class 5 Open to 200 nm off shore and AYF Offshore Yacht Master.

If there are any interested in syndicating this yacht the entry capital required would be $20,000 and be covered by a legal document specifying rights and responsibilities.

Investment is estimated to cover purchase and refurbishment to a high standard that would transform the yacht to a market value very conservatively estimated at $120,000.

My caveat is that I would expect more than just dollar input from fellow syndicate members. Elbow grease reaffirms the sense of ownership.

I am not seeking to make a profit here. What I am seeking is like minded people who would love to cruise the Queensland Coast, with the odd well planned trip to Noumea or other destinations and doing it in great style without a huge financial burden.

Enjoy the photos.

Well I am glad no one is interested as I have decided against getting involved in it.

It can be owned for $20,000 I believe.

Sorry Cisco, are you disappointed. If I lived up your way it could have been a bit of a goer. Love the colour, I hope it finds a better home than Sims Metal.

That the one with no bulkheads in it ?

I missed that 32 foot manitou for 3800 last week. Should have bought it but that canoe stern Bizzo freaks me out and made me hesitate. Was gone the next day. Oh well.

That is a bloody big boat Cisco.

The one in Gladstone, currently at $500, has all the bulkheads and very good timber furniture. Engine with only 50 hours. The Swanson 32 is a very nice boat and I would prefer it over the Swanson 31 on Sydney on eBay, a very different boat but also an excellent buy.
The Manitou is 32 foot long but is actually developed from an older 27 foot design from the sixties [just stretched the mold and added an aft cabin] and has little interior room. The Swanson 32 is very spacious in comparison and was always on my short list.

That is definitely one for the back yard. Could really be turned back into something by the looks.

Not really. About 12m (40 ft) long, maybe 11 or 12 foot beam, draught 4 and a half to 5 feet and probably displaces 12 to 14 tonnes. Could be managed single handed.

Manitou 32s.

You either love them or hate them.

I am of the latter persuasion.

Ugly boats I agree totally. But I like the 32 bit. I have seen a few shots of them where they look half decent and modern and not so yuck. plan was to copy the good looking ones to come up with a teeny bit of positive "row away" factor (if possible) it's a real budget thing Cisco...

So what's with the markings? Cut out pattern for a redesigned keel perhaps? Stealth technology to confuse the opposition (aka Australia II).

I would say it has some minor defects that need grinding out and filled. Pretty much like any 70's/80's fibreglass hull. This looks like a non factory fit out as well. There were a couple of hundred built. More than 50% were built by amatuers hiring the moulds. Swansons only built about 30% of them to completion. Some were sold as kits as well like the Manitou and Compass 28's.

It does look like someone had ideas of modernizing the hull. Cutting away the keel like that would ruin the yachts sea keeping qualities. The Swanson 27 had a keel trim like in the hatched out area, not sure whether the 32 ever did.

One of you local people should be buying this! It would still have 2 tonne of lead in the keel! Hope the rudder is still there somewhere.

Bloody hell, I wish I lived closer. Tempted to drop the 600 on a punt too. I'll work my ass off and get covered in glass till the cows come home. Doesn't bother me. Doubt an 18 t franna would do the lift so a person would be looking at a say ....1000 dollar lift then transport to Brisbane then another 1000 or more dollar lift. I'm fine with that, but the hood thing took so long and I spent every weekend away for six months to rebuild it, it was in such poor condition. Better not.....
Starting to sound like Len76 with all my outer thoughts that should probably be inner thoughts. Sorry!

Well someone got a bargain, $1500 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give the topsides an acid wash. Spend a day filling the defects then antifoul [re instal the rudder]. Lift into the water and re rig. Sail home.
