In the early seventies I sailed with friends in a Hunter 19 offshore South of the heads to watch the Syd Hob start. It was freaking scary in the swell with the big boats of the time bearing down on us! I decided then that the TV coverage was best.

We are going out of botany bay to watch . By the time they get down this far most of the spectator fleet have dropped off.

Last year we sailed down to watch the start and stayed the night at the the CYCA (plenty of space available after the start but you have to be out well before New Year). This year (for fun?) we sailed down from Brisbane Waters and back the same day. Sea was a bit messy and a few idiots on the water but we had a great view of the yachts as they turned around the final harbour marker. We left Pretty Beach at 8.30am and were back on the mooring by 6pm, just as the sun passed the yard arm for afternoon drinks. A long day but a lot of fun.
