I am a brand new member of this great site and my name tag is Boatin.

I have enjoyed power boats for many years and recently bought a 25' sailing boat in Pittwater.

I am planning on sailing it from Careel Bay to Kogarah Bay this coming Friday 17th May.

I am hoping that the winds will give me a fast & smooth ride down the coast. If it takes too long I plan to stay over in Sydney Harbour.

Am happy to receive any comments.

So your name is Boatin and I assume the dog's name is Bosin.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of great people here with a formidable "brains trust".

I don't know your area very well but others here know it intimately. Pose a question whether you think it is silly or not (no such thing as a stupid question) and somebody will surely respond with valuable knowlege.

Above all, have a safe trip. Cheers Cisco.

Welcome to the forum.

I would suggest you check the weather carefully before departing Pittwater. Check the Bom weather page as well as Seabreeze for this weekend, I notice this morning that there is a large difference between the two sites for the weekend. I'm down the coast a bit and we have had vigorous Westerlies that started yesterday and I was expecting them to persist till Sunday. I would also suggest you bookmark buoyweather.com, find the closest buoy to your sailing area and bookmark that. I notice they have 24 to 33 knots for Friday afternoon. This is probably too much for a boat you have just purchased.

There are just brilliant days for sailing this time of the year but I don't think this weekend is one of them. Love to hear more about your boat.

PS. My dog is boat crazy but he gets seasick offshore!

What type of yacht is it? As Ramona says the wind tomorrow is getting up there and a trailer sailer type boat could be in trouble, especially if you are new to sailing and don't know the boat. Saturday and Sunday look better. I'm hoping to get out on Sunday from Pittwater.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and advice. I decided that the winds were looking too strong on Friday and will probably wait til early next week.

The boat is a Mystere 25 which I bought back n January. It handles nicely but everything on Pittwater seems to pass me.

I'm not familiar with the Mystere but it looks like a nice little yacht. It looks very similar to my Duncanson26 in which I did some Sydney Pittwater runs, but you need to pick your weather. It will probably be very tender and the rig isn't designed for strong winds or rough weather.
Pick a day with wind less than 15 knots and you should be fine.
I'd suggest you make sure you have the right safety gear including flares, life jackets, epirb etc.

Are you sure about the GPS requirement? Not listed here:

www.rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime/index.html

But make sure you have all the required equipment. Fines for not having a piece of equipment start at $100.

If you are not going more than 2nm offshore, then you don't need an EPIRB but at the very least I would consider renting a PLB, especially if going solo. They can be rented for $5/day (min 7 days) at GPS OZ in Mona Vale.

I think the Mystere was a follow on from the Triton 24. Raised stern section for more interior room. Designed by an airline pilot? The last of the small family yachts before beginners started buying 45 footers.

I think the Bonbridge 27 came from the same designer. It seems to be well built and I am enjoying her sailing very much.

I couldn't resist googling the Mystere 25. Looks a fine boat inside and out. They offer quite a bit for the money. Well laid out. The head looks to be enclosed which is a bonus. Even though they are rarely used people prefer them out of sight. The one I googled looked in great condition and was in Pittwater advertised at $17,000 with a sold sticker on the ad.

Hi HaveFun, I think that boat for $17k s the boat I got, although a private sale and not from a dealer. When I was looking there were 3 advertised, one at Palm Beach for $19 odd, the other for $17k and the private sale at $12.5k. I was looking at the photos of the cheaper two boats and got totally confused as they appeared to be identical. Anyway the private sale had been for sale for a few months, I made an offer and it was accepted so I got a really nice little yacht for a great price.

It is very well finished off inside as it has full internal moulds.

I am looking forward to getting it down to the Botany Bay/ Port Hacking area. At this time on Friday 17th, Monday and Tuesday next are not looking too bad.
