they don't have to be on moorings it amazes me how many boats in marinas in se QLD have not moved in years as evidenced by the growth on bottoms

They should at least try to give them away before destroying them. There be many a young fella or lass who'd love an opportunity to get a start on a boat.... albeit much expense to get some going again.

Hi, the biggest problem, in our area anyway, is that many of the recipients don't have the knowledge or finances to bring them back and merely repeat the original problem.

Letter in the latest Afloat re this, seems $5000 is the magic number. See "Losing our Heritage" in the below:

It does seem a bit strange that the demo contractor has the say on what's worth $5k or not, but not supprizing given some of the decisions / regulations that our numbnut fearless leaders make on our behalf

Seems like such a waste of everything . Couldn't we tow the unwanted boats [ after de-fueling / oiling , loose plasticizing at owners expense ] to a nominated shallow area near the coast . They would make a great artificial island /reef . Free boat wreckers , extra cruising/ dive wreckers destination . It is so much fun going to a land fill tip ! why not have the marine version ?

Wouldn't work!
I was on a 30' timber boat that sunk and when we returned the next day the only thing left was the engine.
Fibreglass suffers the same fate, but over a few weeks.

Now a steel boat in about 30m will last some decades.
