I have nothing against sailing on or off the dock. Just don't teach weekend warriors its a good idea. As mentioned there are many safer ways to get a boat out of a marina or off the dock.
The RYA does a great job in general in the UK and gets a lot of people out on the water.

I'm inspired to learn more about the finer skills of sailing (isn't everyone?) but from a simple practical sense if my motor wasn't working I'd be staying firmly tied up and looking for a local bar and motor repair man ![]()

I feel the same after many years of sailing.
That sort of attitude will keep you out of trouble. And you will probably find the local mechanic in the bar or someone that knows him. Its a win win situation!
