I must say, aesthetically, I do prefer the look of the Contessa and the Folkboat over the Top Hat. Finer, not so 'chunky'. However, to get me on the water and stop me being like a bear with a sore head from not sailing, perhaps a Top Hat will fill the void for the time being.
I'm thinking the Folkboat may be slightly better to windward considering a fractional rig?
I think this yacht is a Contessa 25 and the reason it looks so good is because it was designed by Doug Peterson which also means it will probably rip off any other yacht of similar size and displacement. The ad does not have any hardstand pics but I am betting this is a fin keel yacht with a spade rudder. Check this link.
sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=8326 The Contessa 26 on the other hand is very similar to a Folkboat but designed by David Sadler, a very well respected English yacht designer. The Sadler 34, a production yacht, actually came with custom "Sadler Yachts" melomine crockery. The Sadler 34 is a fin keel yacht. Check this link for Contessa 26.
sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=601 This one for Sadler 34.
sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=3313 I, having owned a Doug Peterson 42 (IOR 2 tonner) would go for the 25 rather than the 26. A Peterson designed yacht will turn on a dime and power away on the next tack.
However if I particularly wanted a Contessa yacht, the 27 would be my pick for a less than 30 foot yacht. A beamier and more modern design and very similar to my Alan Wright designed Lotus 9.2. The beam is carried aft to a transom hung rudder giving powerful steering capabilities and the wide beam with shallow U shaped hull gives very good stability. Check this link.

sailboatdata.com/view_designer.asp?designer_id=58 The nearest I can come to one of these for sale in Australia is Cavalier 28 designed by Laurie Davidson, another very well respected Kiwi designer.

You seem to be angling towards a long keel yacht and I am wondering why. I hope you are not under the false belief that a long keel yacht is more "comfortable" than a fin keel yacht.
Please understand that anything less than 1,000 foot long afloat on the ocean is by nature "UNcomfortable".
What IS comfortable is getting into the anchorage on your fast fin keeler before nightfall and sipping sundowners while your steak is sizzling on the BBQ, then having a good night's rest while the long keelers are still out there at 10 pm after a hurried meal of 2 minute noodles trying to bash their way into the anchorage.
No offence meant to owners of long keel yachts. Just stating fact.
