Oh well may as ask another question. Has anyone tried a shorter length class5(less than 2.5m) I should imagine it would turn sharper but be a bit twitchy in a straight line. I think the ludic set up this way. How did the class5 come to end up with the lenght at 2.5m
Cheers

Clemco has kindly taken some pics of my class 5 under sail which we dont often get
I am holding the boom up to windward to try and point a bit higher On a yacht that had a traveller I would have the car to windward to do the same job
To answer Gizmos question If the boom were let go in this case it would sag to leeward
How the boom behaves at the tack is largely dependant on where the centre sheeting is on the boom If the position is right the effort on the back of the boom to put it where you want is minimal
I have an easy adjustment to alter this at any time
Just below my wrist I can just see a black knob
This is the outhaul control which I usually have tucked up on the boom but in that position it tells me that the sail is flattened well out
I see the leeward telltales are streaming quite nicely to my eye but it looks as though I have #3 batten tension too tight as the sail looks fuller there
I dont pretend to be an expert so I would welcome any comments or suggestions

Yep, tried the 5 shorter a few times. Bill Finch's Hot Stuff was shorter (2.3?) and was, as you say a little twitchier, but OK. I built another (the 30kg 5) at the same width/length ratio as most of the Euro 3s, again OK. Question, why would you want to turn sharper, when I spend all my time trying to conserve the hard gained speed?
How did the rule come up this way? As previously discussed, the rules were originally set up to encompass a whole heap of existing yachts, at the time known as the mini class. The width, and length were so that the existing ones were included. Most of the rest of the rules were to keep it "cheap and cheerful", that was until the usual "bending" of the rules completely stuffed up the original concept.
