Will await your results with interest, I've only sailed once with new 5 & set up way too heavy at front.
Have moved seat back 100mm but still may be too far forward. I'll have a go with it anyway when I get a chance.
Won't really know if any good until I can get to sail with you guys (maybe next year.)
Cheers

I picked up a couple of Surly black floyd tires cheap 26" x 3.8". fitted them to my 100mm wide rims and they look pretty good. The tubes proved impossible to get as they wanted over $100 freight for 3 tubes. I had a couple of light weight tubes spare from my Royal Enfield and they did the job for $12 each. Maybe they will not suit our surfaces but will never know until we try.
Cheers

Wish I could try things out to, my problem is that Lake Walyungup is closed till December. Lake lefroy is 800k away.
The next chance to sail is at Lake Lefroy at the end of September. That is why I keep playing around in the shed.

it will be interesting to see what pressures they can be run aton the salt.
today I finally got back to my lovely little lake
surface condition is roller skating quality well out past the islands
even got treated to a nice 20knts after lunch and ripped off a nice little 95kph run from the island to the clubhouse.
I twiddled the mast and weight around but it made the yacht completely unsailable, so I reset it all back to where it was at the last state champs and she took off and flew.
Im really looking forward to running against all of vics mods

Hi Paul,
Did you try raking the rig right back as well to re-balance?
I know this is probably a re-visit of ground you've already gone over, but from what I could see of the 5s racing in some of the french races the lateral resistance point must be almost back to the rear axle line for it to work at all.

got it as far back as the set up allows. the new yacht can go further.
I do have photos of my mast in france at the same angle as everybody else, but the European masts have moved forward by up to 150mm since Argentina( Of course I measured them!!!!!!!)
the change in traction is noticable when you sail with big wheels at walyungup. I could get my weight way back down there, as could bazl

Nice. Whats the diameter of that tyre fitted to the 100mm rim?

when we measured a 26" rim with a 2.5hookworm it was just under your class8 maximum . the wider tyres like the endomorph or that black floyd should be well over your max. if you want 4" wide , I think you will have to go with the 24" rims

Cheers guys. I want a wide wheel for soft sand. As landyacht says 26" 50mm rim plus 2.5 hookworm. Gives a diameter just inside of our 27" limit. I'm just wondering in a wider rim would reduce the overall diameter such that say a 26x3" Tyre would come in with a diameter under 27".

Going for 24" rims means I don't need to worry about overall diameter but I cannot find a cheap source of 24" rims.

Pretty easy to make you will need 6 24"rims to make two wheels and a flat mold the same as Pauls for the disc

Yes, it looks a great method.

Just need to find out if 26x3 on a wide 100mm rim is > 27". 26" rims are cheaper and easier to find. There are also more options for tyres.

26x3 will go well over.
I just measuredsome wheels in the shed.
27" =685mm. a 26x2.5 hookworm at 2bar =682mm,at 3bar 683mm.
I wouldnt stretch it to a 75mm rim on your beaches as you would start to lose the softness of the ride.
if you still feel the need to go wide on a 24 " rim then perhaps talk to col as he found a good site for clearance of bike components. he paid almost nothing for his stack of rims

Tis true. But it's always worth keeping an eye open for bankrupt stock and clearance sales. I was getting very frustrated trying to find rims, especially more than one of the same type. Till I started looking for old stock. Found this mob when I built a racing bike years ago, on EBay called bankrupt_bike_parts who still have the original 12x26" rims for £19.99 (gone up a fiver) and also selling 20x16"x1.75" rims for the same...that'd be one hell of a width of front wheel

Cheers Col

Col, do you have a link to that site that has the clearences?

Edit: just realised when Paul mentioned clearence he probably meant clearence as in sale not clearence as in measurements next to bike frames for fitting :)

www.ebaystores.co.uk/bankruptbikeparts

I got them to send the rims to one of their branches and got them collected by the in-laws who then ferried them to us on one of their too frequent visits. Saved the delivery charge at least Contact them through one of their items and see whether they have 24" stock.

Do you run with innertubes on these wheels? Do you need them at high vs low airport pressures?

I have had a set of rear wheels from a quad bike for a while now and had Rob Carr make a set of hubs and axles made for both my LLM and my Promo. On my LLM the ride was too slow and cumbersome but today I tried them out on my Promo and managed a rather noisy 67.4km/h that was extemely smooth and soft on the salt.
The idea behind this setup was to see if we could make an "all terrain" type yacht that would go "good" on low shrub/grass venues. With the extra ground clearance I was able to cross over the causeways/sand bars with minimum discomfort and If I can manage to get a new front end made to suit a fatter tyre/wheel I think we will have a winner
I will post pix when I take 'em

Is she pretty Vic????

The lady in the house across the road, that the telescope is aimed at.

Ha-ha, it looks fantastic mate and finished to your usual perfection.
You're a very hard act to follow and I guess I'll be doing a lot of following at Lefroy, by the looks of that beauty.

Chook. It is referred to as being "Anal Retentive" (Perfectionist) but I agree it does look nice and Quick as well.
