OK , something to kill the between yacht blues .
A little competition for all the experts .
Simple rules. 3 set parameters , 2 weeks for judging, voted by all who post. winner sets next 3 parameters. you must put in some kind of drawing to be judged, any discussion welcomed and encouraged.

First design to be as follows.
1. 5.5m sail.
2. sock on mast.
3. Asymmetrical landyacht.

Your time starts now . judging in 2 weeks

Just a couple of questions....
1. Is it to be built later or do you mean a radical pie in the sky stuff design?
2. Define "Asymmetrical landyacht" (do you mean can be sailed in either /any direction rather than a one way yacht)?

Ok Paul..... The "Sail"
This is an idea thats been kicking around for many years and infact is the reason why one of the class 6 rules are written as it is.
PADDED SAIL The concept is to sandwich foam between 2 layers of sailcloth giving a "soft" wing.
The drawings that i have done have come from lots of research from the book " Aero & Hydrodynamics of Sailing"
The ideal sail ratio for lift /drag is approx 3.5:1 to 4:1 and the shape that has the least drag is eliptical (as shown in the first drawing ) The sail shape is then fitted into the elipse shape.
The second drawing is of what the sail shape cross section would be with a padded sail.
The third drawing is from the book of how a padded sail would be constructed....

Thought Id get inspired by the Iron duck, and build an Iron Duckling, Copious amounts of drill tube of course to give it some length in a blow

Attempting to go for something clean and simple, and not rely on massive chunks of lead to keep me on the deck

We didn't, thats my department

The leather helmet and googles:

The finest of mulit-impact leather fresh from Protec California with ABS shell and custom Turner implosion resistant, rigid, low drag visor with a dash of 316 fasteners.

The C5 spec rig is in works by Keith ATM. Details soon.

"Quad Landyacht"
A design concept for a bat wing bi-direction Asymmetrical landyacht.......
The outrigger wheels / axles to be raised approx 150-200mm each side when yacht is "level"
Hopefully at speed in a broad sweeping turn both outer wheels would be off the ground, this would then have reduced the bearing / wheel drag to just 2 wheels and not 3.
This configuration would also enable sweeping tacks downwind to build up speed.
Rig to be a padded sail or tradional wing mast setup

Here is another variation of an Asymmetrical landyacht......
"Sidecar" has a pod on one side ....steering would need to be done via cables
It might feel odd not being able to look up at a sail and see the shape in it.
Could be made with or without wings......

Ive had a thought or 3 about a rig for the wonky yacht and looked back in the history books of landsailing to see what has worked/not worked. B ack in the world of wataer the wing mast reached its peak in the 'C' class catamarans in 1972 with Quest 3 the rigs at this tme leveled out to a 1/3 wingmat,2/3 sail . the next step was the full solid wing with flaps.
the same ratio seems to have worked with landyacht rigs. I saw Nord Embrodens "Silver Bullet "on its Maiden sail and it was truly impressive His rig was a 1/3 wing ,2/3 sail combination, so I'll stick with that. Since the rules of this compsay a sock sail I will be inspired by the only effective sockwing I have seen.
the rig on the seagull STANDART is a really clever set up where the 'wing ' floats over the mast and is held in shape by a series of plastic formers that the regular battens slip into. initially the system is a real pain but seems to settle down with use .It differs from the CAM system on windsurfers in that it doesnt push against the mast. this then allows the rig to flattened out for higher speed sailing .

something like this

yeah go for it, my original non-tint version I used for about 5 years, no problem with the limestone gravel we have here. good thing about acrylic is you can polish out any scratches if need be. I can give you measurement of the flat material if you need. I had a template but lent it to someone and havent seen it since.

If your interested here is a bit more info on wing sails from the world of catamaran racing.

http://www.a-cat.org/id129.htm

Also if your into a bit of history, the guys at the Nacra factory in Brisbane have the original wing/soft sail that was once on a Nacra 18sq built by Bob Forbes during the 80's, it's currently in pieces but they are planning on restoring it some time in the future, it is a true piece of craftsmanship.

Till next time

Yes please, tell us who won the carton of Bundy Ginger beer?

I have been away for a week having to go to Melb. What a terrible ugly and dirty place. Couldnt get home quick enough. Hope I never have to go there again! The whole place is a rip off and as for those toll roads and tunnels, they are the pits!
So what have I missed while being away??

If anyone is authorized to comment about Melb. it's me! I was born there, lived there for 23 years, saw the light and left as fast as I could. So all you Melbournians can say what you like. It's just water off a ducks back.
One of the most stupid and ugly sights I saw was the steel "wall" that forms a sound deflector (?) on the way to Werribie. The wall was about 8 feet high, about 800 meters long and unpainted. It was a wall of heavily rusted steel sheeting that looked like it came from a rubish dump. The poor people who live there will know exactly the "wall" I'm describing. I was told it was "artistic!". Yeah, right!.
I was amazed at how small and how close the houses were. Even worse, I couldn't see where the kids could play. Everything was very expensive and I still couldnt find shoes that fitted or a Parker fountain pen the same as Kody had chewed.

In comparison, I came home, put Kody in the car and drove up Farnbourough Beach from Bangalee then four klms past Rydges. The beach was glorious, the sand was hard and four hundred meters wide. The sea breeze was blowing at 15 knts at nintey degs to the shore. Just perfect for a run up the beach with the car or a S/Y. With twenty six acres of forrest under my feet at home, no water restrictions and beaches that are perfect, why would I ever want to live again in Melb?

I like Gizmo's 'sidecar' design the most due to the fact I'd never seen the layout before and getting lifted off the ground as much as you would being in that cockpit seems scary fun

Hope everyones having fun. Looking forward to posting a design in the next comp, after my thesis is written and submitted
