You will have to leave Melbourne and head down to the Mornington Peninsula if you want to ride the Northerlies. Typically, whatever South Chanel is reading, it doesn't hurt to assume the front beach will be receiving something less than that.

Or you could head down to kite beach at the end of Dendy St, Brighton (experienced riders only). A northerly at Brighton is cross-shore breeze at best, tending offshore at times (not to mention a nice reef waiting for you downwind if you slip up).

The forecast will indicate if the conditions may be OK for you but be sure to check in with what's actually happening when you're at the beach. Sounds obvious, but some guys rig for the forecast despite immediate evidence that the forecast was inaccurate.

As you're a beginner, you should only head out if others are out already. If they are, check what size kites they're on and how heavy they look compared to you. If guys the same size as you are on 9m kites and powered up, forget using your 13. Again, sounds obvious, but many beginners who only have a 12m will head out when experienced riders are on 8s and 9s, because they believe the marketing hype about 100% depower and ridiculous wind range claims on seabreeze forums and other such palaver.

That said, if it's a mellow 15-20 and others are out on 12s and 13s, have fun!

Yeh it makes me worried, was that short intermezzo of Northerlies really it?
The last two seasons it was howling whole August, best month of the year.
At least it's pretty warm for winter..
