SUP's longevity and popularity for me will be similar to when everyone first bought the one design "windsurfers" in comparison to todays numbers. Wont be long till everyone has one in their garage and only the real SUPers will continue to purchase.

In 5 years how many people reading this will still be kitesurfing?

Does that make kitesurfing a fad?

Point was- I don't really are whether anything I do is a fad

I actually hope kitesurfing is past it's pinnacle fadness - it will mean more room in the ocean for those of us that did it before it was the cool thing to feature in a TV advert for...anything

"Next big thing"

Devastated - someone beat me to it.

kitesurfing fads
___________

Shorts over wetsuit

30m lines

18 and 20m kites

sup kite wtf were they thinking

Formula Kite Racing

Mutant boards

9 struts

Kites for jumping high (maybe making a small comeback?!)

Giant board handles and rail grips

Kite bags to leave your partly inflated kite in

Next thing - retro kiting? real simple - plank of wood board and a low tech kite....? beard

I'll happily increase the number of foilers if I don't have to remortgage my house.

Yep already been done, just a reminder for us who have already seen it. Back to the future or should I say the hipster Fixie riders are already onto it (before it becomes cool)

Have to agree. I can kinda see the attraction for paddling up to and catching small waves that would otherwise be unsurfable. But wtf is up with people paddling around in lakes etc? It looks about as exciting as water trikes. Remember those bloody things?

Foil kites are making a comeback!....

So are mutant boards.... But they aren't called mutants anymore because that's uncool. Its as revolutionary new design! people are finally discovering hey. "We don't actually need a pointy nose on our surfboard". If i cut the nose of it make it a bit more square edged make it a bit wider in the back eureka! Such a fun board. Example firewire vanguard.

Old school boosting too... that was so uncool in favour of pretending to be a wakeboarder for years. Now its back in the form of king of air!... And so it should.

On the beach it doesn't matter how good you are as a wake styler order wavekiter. The general beach crowd will always be more blown away by the dude punting the biggest air on the day.

I agree Plummet, all the other stuff is cool, technical, hard to do and your stoked when you land it. But when friends and family come down to watch me all they want is for me to pull as much air as possible.

SUPs are pathetic, if you want to paddle, get a kayak and go way faster than a SUP. If you want to surf tiny waves, get a well shaped 8foot mal that actually turns, and is enjoyable to ride.

I hate it when boogey boarders and SUP riders say "just been for a surf" - you aren't surfers, you never will be.

wdric, you are correct that the guy in the video is obviously a great surfer.

But he is at "work" when he's riding a sup.
Let me explain:
Sups are a fantastic way to extract cash from doctors, lawyers and accountants. The best way to do this is to pay a real surfer to ride one and show the "potential of these great boards"
(He doesn't actually want to ride the sup, he would much rather be carving sick cutties on a 6'3 thruster.)

Many of us wear a neatly pressed shirt and shiny black shoes to work when we'd rather wear boardies and no shoes, this guy is just trying to make a crust, but his boardroom is slightly more interesting than most.

Edit: oh and he's also working his core, lol.

I'm sure there are instances when a sup can surf a wave and a surfboard cannot. Perhaps a time when the break is too far to paddle a surfboard too. Perhaps a time when the waves aren't that steep? You can catch them by paddling in on a sup but not a surfboard.
If you are addicted with riding waves then you will find the craft to ride the wave what ever the conditions.

In saying that.... I do not sup or surf for that matter.

Why on earth slow myself to such low speed activities when I can rip it up at speed behind a kite?

If there's not enough wind for kiting then I haul out the mountainbike. Either way speed is my friend.

Care to explain when these instances might be? For most in Australia I think they are few and far between. In my opinion SUPing is most fun in flat water, or out in the ocean going from place A to place B (like a Kayak), I have no desire to ride waves on them (for aforementioned reasons), I can live with the fact some do though.
