We are in the kiteSURFING section. We are kitesurfing...... surfing waves with a kite = kitesurfing......

PS I am in one the best locations in the world for surfing on any give week you easily get clean well formed waves within 30 mins drive. Usually 5 mins drive.

But I choose to kitesurf. For me its way way way more fun. But I am not a waterman like lots of you guys. I don't have the urge to be in the water because of waters sake. I don't aim to look for other water activities when the wind is light.I am a kiter and have the urge to kite because of kiting sake. That is why I kite land and water. I don't care what i'm kiting over as long as I am kiting.

I would say kiting has improved my surfing. But it's surfing that really improves your surfing. I'm off for a paddle now.

Yes. At the end of the who really cares what you call what you are doing as long as your grinning.

When i'm on a wave face and I feel the push of the wave I choose to call it surfing the wave. I can ride that wave until my lines go slack and the kite falls out of the sky yet I am still riding the wave.... magically doing as it seems because apparently I am not "surfing" the wave. What's even more offensive to the purist surfer I'm doing it one a mutant or TT.... Again apparently it is impossible to "surf" waves on such boards....Hell as I have discovered in the last couple I days I can even surf the wave on my monster light wind door.

There will be some dead surfers rolling around in there graves because of the unconventional activities I undertake on the wave face. but what do I care?

Would you like to outline exactly where? All I'm reading is some users with differing opinions putting forth their views.
As far as I can tell no one is talking about themselves or trying to "self validate" them self and if they were it would be the people that are claiming they are "surfing" for whatever reason that would be, although I don't believe they are doing this either.

The topic steered away from what was originally asked for a few reasons, that doesn't mean it is wrong or we shouldn't do it... This a forum and discussion can change direction at anytime, that's the whole reason for having a Forum and not a Question and Answer type setup.
The real problem was the original Post in this thread was poorly worded to begin with, the title of the thread asked one question while the text of the thread said another... this didn't help the direction the thread went, because no one really knew for sure what he was asking.
Obviously some people in this thread are at a disagreement and a debate has arisen, this is normal forum behavior and usually what you do in a debate situation is try and convince people in some way that what you are saying holds value or is correct. So I think you should start getting used to stuff like this you plan on reading much more internet dribble because internet-wide this is pretty common place.

I suggest for people like you (if you post in the future) if this kind of thing (people getting off topic) really annoys you that much, make sure you structure your first post as a short concise question. This will help eliminate miss-interpretation and hold back the meandering off topic that is bound to happen on the internet for at least a few posts.

Can I ask then, would being a surfer be a detriment to kiting in waves? I would expect most surfers are either 'goofy' or 'natural' stance and some times conditions would make you go in a direction that doesn't suit your style. Kiting allows you to visit so many different spots in such a short time, if you were 'stuck' in your ways, wouldn't being stuck in 'goofy' or 'natural' stance force you to use the waves less effectively. Supose it doesn't matter because 'effective use' of a wave is so subjective so who cares anyway. I don't know 'cause I don't surf.

So long as you got the stoke, its all cool ey!! Just a thought, is "stoke" a surfing term, are we allowed to use that???? Juz wonding is all??

I grew up body surfing - no fins or hand ski. Weren't allowed to have equipment. It was seen as being a bit posh and that wasn't allowed, to be posh . Only the smart people had equipment. We were lucky to have boardies.

Even a wettie was frowned upon and this was southern SA coast
Bought my first wettie with 2 weeks work in the shearing shed and boy did that cause a stir.

So was this surfing or not cause In theory it's the purest form ? Body surfing in nothing but your togs until you were blue.
