The WAKSA Wedge Island Wave Comp is shaping up as a great event - we've had more than 25 people indicate they are going to compete which is great news.

The $20 entry fee covers your participation in the event, as well as the costs for having the event filmed and edited - WAKSA is going to produce a short video of the event so everyone can see WA's best wave kiters in action!

Divisions are Amateurs, Juniors, Womens, Open, Masters & Grand Masters. These are consistent with AKSA divisions.

This is a one day event, so the comp format, heat sizes and divisions depend on the number of competitors. We will let you all know the exact day, times and format closer to the event, once the weather conditions are known. We plan to have scored heats - 3 best waves for each rider - we will be asking all competitors to judge a heat, so please be ready to lend a hand on judging.

Wind and wave permitting, the comp will run from 11am through to 6pm with presos in the evening (probably at the pub in Cervantes). We have trophies* for winners in all divisions and Kite Addiction have donated a prize for every competitor.

The comp site is 3 km's north of the settlement. Go to the beach at Wedge settlment, head north along the beach for 3kms. There is a reef and a small bay that sets up some nice banks. WAKSA checked out the comp site last weekend and things are looking good with a left breaking off the reef closing out and a right and left peak just north, all reforming on the inside.

You will need a 4WD to get to the comp site - or line up a lift with someone you know. You can get a 2WD to the Wedge settlement but you need 4WD to get along the beach. There is a 2WD carpark just in front of the beach entrance at the Wedge settlement where you can leave your car and meet your lift etc.

Wedge is a harsh and windy place - and there are no shops or services. Once the wind starts, the fine sand starts whipping down the beach and gets everywhere. So bring your own food, water and shelter. WAKSA will have basic shelter setup for judges and competitors.

Essential details:
Date: either 13th or 14th (check seabreeze daily before the comp) - a downwinder on the other day is general consensus!
Accommodation: Cervantes - camping or houses etc.
Evening entertainment: pub in Cervantes
Entry fee: $20 per person

anyone stayed in a nice big house in cervanties they can recommend? looking for a big house to share with some friends but havent found much.

Actually Spot 1 I don't know what the go is as far as being a WAKSA member so I hope someone else can answer that for you, I'm also still unsure about the divisions but I'm fairly sure I don't qualify for Junions or Womens....others may disagree.

Of course! You have to be a member to kite in ANY kite event anywhere round the country. The new national membership data base makes it an absolute synch. Hit aksa.com.au or any state KSA website and you'll be registered in a couple of minutes. Your enrolment from any site will automatically link you into your home state KSA.
WAKSA will probably make paying on the day an option but all that does is make a whole lot more work for the organisers.
The new database has an event registration functionality built-in. Once all states are up to speed with how it all works ALL events will involve online registration.
Simple quick effective and efficient for everyone.
Thats why the states got together to develop it.

long range is looking good, seabreezes pattern starting back up and a lil swell starting to build thursday/friday so should be decent swell for weekend if things dont change. fingers crossed - the weekend could be epic wind and waves!

Im trying to sort somewhere to stay, Lano or Cervanties.
Sat looks good for the comp so I thought Lano would make more sense.

It is closer to Perth so the crew wanting to go home wouldnt have to drive so far and from what I can tell, Lano has better accom options.

The word was a pressie at Cervanties pub - is that organised or could we switch it to Lano?

Everyone I talk to is all saying they are playing it by ear, but with the weekend getting close its time to make a call. Surely it better if most of the crew stay in the same town?

Yeah as a few others have said lano is closer to Perth, seems strange to go and stat further away from Perth and there's no waves at Cervantes . I'll stay wherever but if I had a choice I'd say lano as it's way closer to Perth has good pub and way nicer accommodation . Just be good to know where's everyone staying as alot of crew I've spoken to aren't sure where to stay- me included. My 2 cents

Looks like Cervantes is the call. The pub is booked for the pressie so Im making a booking at the caravan park.

Zeph, it will be beachies. Usually shoulder to head high, pretty soft really. Not sure where your from, but you wont be getting the best waves of your life or anything, but it should be fun.

is there going to be a heat draw and format before the comp.... or is it going to be put together on the day??

cervantes caravan park is a great spot with good facilities BBQ,s, grass,
clean toilets showers etc I have stayed there several times and rate it as far as
c-van parks go, not sure but like most would probably have onsite vans to rent, I usually tent it and is well comfortable


oh and there are also some pretty nice outer reefs...

Aw Lurch, can't wait to see you. Will bring meat, whisky and jelly fish yoyo for the grom.

saturday looks best for swell and wind. sunday swells dropping and winds look like they will be nuking. saturday is the day it should be ran!
