Kent would do the crossing on a sup without wind no problems.
He hasn't kited much for a while, i'm thinking he's going to struggle on the Doctor board that he needs to sell to me :)
So yet again the race is going to be run in marginal conditions..................??????
I appreciate the pressure of running this event but i dont want to see a repeat of 2015.
Sunday doesn't feel like its going to work! Next weekend? ![]()
Tonight was forcast to be knob end up here, felt like all day a non kite evening, then on the horizon the sea breeze band appeared, massively lit up on the 12, stay optermistic

Hey Guys,
I can't do Sunday, it's my sons birthday, so pm me if you are keen to take my spot.
I don't know what it will entail to do the name change but we can look into it.
Cheers

Negative maybe... But 37 degree days in perth never yield wind. Weather patterns look awesome for next weekend though... ![]()

Damn ferry company wouldn't let me put my SUP in the crate, it was only hanging out about 10' ![]()
That Cape Doctor board might be for sale, seems it has a curse on it, it's made for strong wind and every time I enter a race the wind disappears.
Seriously though my gear is in the crate but unless forecast looks better by tonight I think I will sit it out.
I have a feeling it is going to be a long hot day waiting for the ferry home.
Or worse a long swim.
Is there any chance the race could be postponed again?

Cape Doctor - I think you had more luck with that board when you were borrowing it. I assume I have first right of refusal

Don't assume anything Slack i know you were the original owner and Kent has been looking after her but she needs a new home. :)
Kent after the LOC mate..................i'll have the reddies $$$$
well they got going pretty late, winds light
was sitting on nth cott beach and could see the kites gradually coming into view
winner was a mile in front, as were the first 4 or so'
large foil kites maybe
Thanks to L2L for an amazing day, winds were really light but managed to get in on my 12m. Really well organised event and great crew all involved.
The foils were really impressive to watch in such light conditions over at Rotto, where all the the lei kites were lying on the water. Thanks to all the volunteers who brought all our gear back.
Hopefully I will be drawn out the hat again for next year.
Another fun Race.
First place and the rest of that pack are in another league, pretty impressive to watch and very hard to keep up with.
Thanks to all the volunteers, organizers, boat drivers and everyone else who makes this possible, a lot of work must go on behind the scenes.
Here's to 2018, maybe there will finally be 30 knots.
+++ to the sponsors, race organisers (especially Tim and race directors) a big thank you to volunteers and of course fellow competitors for making this such a great day. Met some nice crew and had a few good yarns....................for me is was just about making the crossing today, which i did :)
I lent a 12m red/blue Cabrinha switchblade at the start of the L2L. We missed each other at the finish line. Please feel free to get in touch so we can organise a pickup/drop off before I head back over east.

I wanted to pass on my thanks for a great day as well. Seemed a bit doubtful we would get off the beach at Rotto for a while there - especially as I drifted downwind with a kite that refused to re-launch. I got safely across though the lulls in wind which was my objective.
Really appreciate all the work that went in to putting the event together and on the day. Big thanks to the sponsors, race organisers and the volunteers .
Great race as I watched from the lookout over Leighton beach as the competitors left Rotto & flew across to Leighton on a perfectly flat Gague roads in light 13/17 knots of wind. The conditions were ideal for the top 4 or 5 pro foilers who finished the race lit up doing at least 30knots and minutes ahead the next pack of foilers who where a couple of minutes ahead of the 1st non foil boards who finished 12th, 13th and 14th. Everyone was stocked on the beach and it was an amazing sight to see on a beautiful sunny WA day. Just a thought after a few riders mentioned this to me on the beach after the race was over - maybe for next year - as we all know that the top pro foil boards are incredibly fast and totally unbeatable and only available the worlds best riders. And that's cool. But maybe split the foils into their own section and have the surfboard slalom boards in there own section like the twin tips. This would give the weekend warriors and guys who design build there own boards incentive to race their own designs. It's pretty amazing to ride a board you have designed for the race and continue to dream of finishing into top 10. It's easy to see that the foils will dominate more and more in the future and other types of racing boards will disappear. IMO that's a shame. The difference for a rider being being a top line pro foil & board will cost you over $4000 / $5000 and the fastest Mikes Lab foil only available to the top riders in the world. A home made slalom board will cost you $1000 to build- but will take you many many pleasurable hours of personal time to get the board tuned with fins to ride fast for the race. Back to the race - as usual it's the best race day of the year in WA for kiters.
Well done Tim and the team. Also Tim great timing on the wind and also avoiding the massive cargo boat that cruised at 20 knots through the race line around 3pm. Oarsome as usual. JohnnoKeys
PS - I injured my arm last year so not planning to race in the future
Amazing day as always, thanks to the organisation and all volunteers.

Yes it has turned into a bit of an arms race at the pointy end, the average punter isn't going to stand a chance against pro's with equipment worth many times more but I guess that's racing.
Directional boards that are not foils (i.e. surf/slalom boards) are going to finish at times closer to the TT's than foils in the sort of conditions that we experienced on the weekend.
So perhaps they should be in with them or yes have there own category but how many divisions do you have?
It's not just the foil boards but also the foil kites, they are way more efficient but also way more expensive and for the weekend warrior they are just out of the question but again I guess that is racing.
Whilst there will always be people that just want to do the race/crossing, I think we will start to see numbers drop as the divide gets greater, not sure what can be done about it though.
If it had been run this weekend coming would it have been closer?
Thanks heaps to Tim, the organisers and volunteers for there great effort and organisation.
Whilst I made it across and enjoyed the day, I feel sorry though for the poor kiters that have travelled across the country but couldn't even get of the beach.
First time competitor, and just happy to have finished inside the cutoff. And wow, what a fantastic day.
Thanks so much to Tim, and all the organisers and volunteers. I loved ever minute of it despite a little Kite tangle in the middle. Apologies again to Ben, whose kite i crashed while taking evasive action from numerous other kites that had fallen into the drink in a wind shadow around the large ships.
Can anyone tell me where we can look at and possible order pics from the day, either from the beach or the finish boat, or anywhere else that the Pro Photog's were hanging around.
Thanks Again.

Hi Aspiremr. I was down there taking photos, & have quite a few to edit through. I will be placing a package on my website www.truespiritphotos.com & I will leave a posting on Seabreeze ( Kitesurfing / General ) as soon as they are up for viewing. I really am hoping to have it finished by early hrs tomorrow morning. Cheers, Gordon
Does anybody who was there know what gear the twin tips that won were riding on? Kite make, model and board size.. I'm curious... Thanks
Full carbon Nomad board, not sure about the kite, maybe Ozone R1? Hadlow was right behind with his North TS and Dyno 15m.
There's your top 3 boards - CF Nomad, twintip with boots, twin tip with footpads. Didn't get to see what kites they were on. The Nomad was a 142x41.5, I was eyeing it off before we started.

Top 3 ladies were all in boots.

I was a first time racer as well - Ocean Rodeo Mako 140x40, Airush VXR 13m with 5m line extensions (27m total). Was 10min behind the twin tip winner, only launched after the green flag went up. Wind was pretty light there on the beach at the start, but once I got moving it wasn't too bad - and definitely think the line extensions helped with the wind shadow going between the two moored tankers.
Awesome day, great event - many thanks to Tim, the rest of the organisers and volunteers. Look forward to hopefully getting another crack in the future!
