I wasn't there but after reading the post-race posts I am at a lost as to how they awarded a 3rd place. I would have thought the 3rd place prize money should have gone on the bar.
I could be wrong but I think most of the 3rd place money did go on the bar.
I wasn't going to mention this but after speaking to a few of the more experienced racers including a spectator that is a very experienced yacht racer, I have to question the 3rd place decision.
No matter how I put this it is going to sound like sour grapes and that I am just having a whinge but in the effort to try and make this event bigger, better and more professional next year I think it needs to be said.
I am not tryin to have a go at Marty or the judges it was always going to be hard to decide what to do under the circumstances but I think awarding any place to anyone that did not complete the full course sets a dangerous precedent for the following reasons, sorry if this gets a bit long long winded but here is my story.
After rounding the first marker in second position I lost quite a bit of time out in the vicinity of the second marker along with Johnno and a couple of others and I still am not sure how close we got to it (or if we may have rounded it without seeing it) but know that it was a lot closer than quite a few that passed us and just headed straight for the 3rd marker.
After rounding the 3rd marker back in about 6th or so I fought my way back up to be fighting it out up the front with a couple of others as we approached Edward Island.
(I also believe Dale pulled out of the race at the 3rd mark when he realised that he had missed the 2nd)
Just before we reached Edward Island I crossed paths with a couple of kites that were pretty much hugging the reef because I was aware that the marker was a fair way behind the reef and wanted to get deeper.
I am sure photo's will show and others that were behind will know there was nothing in it between myself, Marty and a couple of others up front and as I have surfed and sailed those reefs for over 30 years I am sure I could have cut through Hole in the Wall and hit the beach first or even just cut in close at passage and It would have at the very least gone down to the wire.
Any of the other kites that were close behind (Martin, Alty, Philip, Johhno) as we approached South Passage will probably remember seeing the big Cabrinha turning right through the South Passage whilst the Blue and White Switch kite (me) turned left and headed out to sea to try to find the marker.
Whilst I did eventually see it it was a long way back upwind and I was fairly sure I had missed the 2nd one anyway so just figured I may as well just do as all the others were doing and head for shore thinking we would all be disqualified anyway and for that reason I did not protest at the time.
So basically what I am saying is that by rewarding those that get to the beach first regardless of how many marks they made or how close they got to them, it just encourages a drag race from start to finish, which is not a good thing.
Rant over and once again I don't want to offend anyone, I was stoked that the race was held and appreciate the huge effort of all concerned.
Lessons were learned and I am sure that this event can get bigger and better.
FWIW here is a copy of my GPS track.
