Akwa just bring more rum man won't need a swag then you'll sleep anyway!

And stevebeva yeh didn't read that bit, march, April we would need 17m kites a bible and some serious Farqin luck to be not blown to Africa on the easterlies.

Those swags do look small and compact hey. Akwa you could hide a bottle of rum in each I reckon.

Fruit and nut mix and boiled eggs, interesting times around the camp fire! I'd recommend some hydration supplements as well.

Ha ha spear gunning at 2o knots now that's an extreme sport. Load the jellies did ya. Just don't hold the gun upwards.

I'd be on my edges though so I will wait for you at each designated Spot. I'll have plenty of time to spear a fish for the boys. Ha ha ha

Seriously though a damn good idea. I couldn't organise a chook raffle (wife does all that, then i dont have to think too much, well at all really) but I would be keen to be part of it.

What kite sizes, makes, boards did you use?

Rider 1 - 70kg 9m cab nomad 133cm twin tip 10kg pack

Rider 2 - 90kg 9m cab switchy 142twin 15-20kg pack

Rider 3 - 100kg 11.5 grif Argo 135 twin 15-20kg.

Packs weighed a bit more wet.

Prob all size up next time but the forecast was for windy.

Took a cyrano 970 and 85cm band gun as a toothy poker.

Wind was 20kt + on the first day, somewhere around 15 the second which why we had to walk for the packs around eagle bluff. In hindsight southern side of the bluff wasn't the best choice to camp but we were expecting SE in the morning.

Good idea, I'll check the tides in the area for that date tomorrow.

bummer his cat would be handy. You should be fine with water depth on twin tips but if your using surfboards the area near mandu george may be a bit shallow on low tide. I went through there on a 0.4m tide and it was pretty shallow so if you aim for neap tides you should be right to stay inside the reef. Also not sure if you you were thinking you could get all the way to Exmouth but I can't see you getting past the lighthouse.
Personally I would prefer some shelter at nights and don't forget the ghost crabs can be a pain to sleep with that time of year.
As for whoever said it would be a good side business just ask puppet about all the red tape that would be involved.
enjoy

Yeah business wise the safety regulations, legalities and procedures for something like that would have to be carefully sorted out but I reckon it would be achievable

If water depth is not too much of an issue, id definitely recommend a surf board instead of tt. 3 of us did 180 miles in 2 days. First day we all tried tt, 2nd day changed to sb. So much more comfortable, stable straight down wind and less conC. Needed.

Man I live for this kind. Of thing. But I'm on the otherside of the blue marble.
Been renovating an old. Wooden sailing boat for the last 2 years. Hoping to take her on some long trips exploring for waves and remote kite spots. Maybe Scotland, mAybe west coast of France/Spain.

Good luck dudes! Sounds like a great way to kite. FReedoM....

These are the packs we are using. Easy access for quick water/food stops, has a sternum strap which helps quite a bit. And the waist strap is remove able so we can slide the handlepass leash or some strapping through to intergrate it into the kite harness and transfer some of weight. The daisy chains look perfect for securing pump/spare bar etc and also for attaching everything if we found we had to walk everything out to the road or around an unmake able headland or something.

Dont think you'd want to be out on an 18m kite with 22 knot winds though

yep thats the bloke.
He had a small windrush cat that he took the mast off and used a kite to sail it but he also had about a 3hp outboard on the transom. He even made it narrower so it would fit on the roof of his old patrol.
When he had it up here they even used it for tow in surfing. The thing used to hook along too.

Yep Mick the instructor has an old surf cat that he has modified, I think he made it a bit narrower.

The kite CL is shackled to the front cross bar and one guy sits up there controlling it whilst another is on the tiller.

Wicked fun and can power upwind in light wind.

Edit: you beat me TH.

the sou wester often doesn't get past the lighthouse point. it can be 25 knots at hunter's beach (at the lighthouse) and dead calm at dunes even though they're only a k or so apart.
sounds like an awesome trip- hope you score good wind

Good to know, thanks. Where would you recommend as a good landing point near the area and do you know if there is Telstra coverage out that way to call the wives etc? Or alternatively I guess we could put them up at the lighthouse caravan park and one or two of us may have to take a walk?

You should be able to land at hunters right at the lighthouse but phone reception is very hit and miss unless you walk up to the lighthouse.

Hi Steve,

Great idea and adventure, I do a few days a year hunting in the bush in NZ where we hunt all day with a pack on the back aand camp out where we end up. All up weight of backback, food, sleeping gear and clothes is around 8-10 kgs.

Do a google on ultralite hiking or tramping heaps of good options for tents/shelters or bivies a lot less weight than that swag. Food choices like dehyd meals (backcountry) are a good option but you do need water to rehydrate them, maybe some would be fine with seawater? Or do as you have done and go with cold food options, one square meals are good, salami, cheese, mountain bread all good high enegry choices

You would still want to dry clothes and sleeping gear double bagged (plastic) inside those backpacks, nothing is 100% water proof.

Suggest a waterproof point and shoot next trip so you can make us all jealous with photos.

Cheers

Many years ago I got interested in the idea of "Sea trecking "(with windurfers cause Kites werent invented)and doing a run with a support vehicle. I spent a lot of time fishing and working along the coast between red bluff and Exmouth and I reckon you could easily do an absolute EPic mission if you were well prepared and worked up to it. I initially thought that Coral bay to Exmouth would be good , but depending on your adventure level and your confidence to get outside the reef (when you had to ) it would be possible to kite a big section of this coast.

I think if you dont have either a support vehicle (to meet you at set points with at least some basic comforts -like plenty of drinking water) and or a support vessel , I think you would be limited to a couple of days at most , mainly because of the water supplies. Remember that you really need 5 litres of water per person per day (you can sweat 2 litres per hour if you are REALLY hot).

That said well planned and prepared almost anything is possible.

Maybe doing a shakedown trip to troubleshoot (like a day or an overnighter) before you commit to the epic would be a good idea...

Then when your ready, Contact Red bull and tell them your sailing from Carnarvon sharkbay Geraldton to Exmouth ...YEW!!!

you could always top up your water from where the kangaroos dig up their water.
Lefroy bay has shallow bores you can fill up from. Tastes better than town water too.

I wouldn't attempt that stretch without good boat support.

Where do you get those small swags from? We slept in sleeping bags on a tarp but was too hot and a lot of bugs/spiders. Would be nice to have something with a cover.

As AndyHansen showed its easy to turn you kite into a tent. Can also use one as a groundsheet if you dont like the sand. I know I had mentioned towing a inflatable tube or sled if carrying lots of weight (water) for extended trips. One other item I was looking at to reduce weight was a portable desalinator

http://www.katadyn.com/sgen/katadyn-products/products/katadynshopconnect/katadyn-entsalzer-manuelle-survivors/

Although these were a little pricey for me, but at ~ 1kg for unlimited drinking water. Certainly seems like a worthy investment if your going to do this regularly or for extended periods.

If you ever plan on doing this on the east coast (particularly the Whitsundays) would be happy to join. (ps. I also spear)

Cheers
