Hello everybody,

I'm new to this forum and am thinking of taking up kiteboarding or windsurfing. I'm skater and I surf too so I'm thinking it may help a little?

Just wondering where I need to start? I have some surfer mates that windsurf too they are trying to get me into windsurfing, they say kiting is like body boarding is to surfing and it's more of a metro sexual type sport. I just thought kiting looked like it would be easier, less expensive etc is it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Creating a profile and posting on both kitesurfing and windsurfing forums...... You must not have much of a life to go to that effort for whatever reaction you are hoping for.

To many sharks in South Africa mate, just give the surfing away and take up scrapbooking or knitting.

Just after advice, my girlfriend is watching some girly show on TV and I don't have to study tonight. I'm pretty keen to start up kiteboarding or windsurfing, I just don't know much about the two so I'm after advice. Most of the advice so far has been from windsurfers.

Take up windsurfing. Kiteboarders are all gay and would be all over a new boy on the beach.

So....so far the advice is that windsurfing is better and you are gay?

Thanks

Can I just ask if it is easier to learn to kiteboard on a surfboard than a propper kite board? Also what type, size, and year of kite would be the best to start on? What are the things to look out for when buying a second hand kite?

Yeah, definitely go windsurfing. The reason we wear our boardies over our wetties is for extra protection, we are all gay.

If you decide to learn to kite. Make sure you get a C model, from 2002-2005 (the late model's are crap). Look on ebay, heaps of bargains. You don't need lessons, just set up the kite and get your gf to throw the kite up in the air. Do it where there aren't any other kiters because we'll get the ****s until you have learnt.

Take up roller blading, its way cooler than kiteboarding, and almost as cool as poleboarding(windsurfing).

Seriously though kiting and windsurfing are both as expensive or inexpensive as you want them to be. 2nd hand gear is cheap!. They are both cool in different ways. You will not get balanced answers about the merits of both on a kite surfing forum. Check out your local beach and watch youtube videos. Make your own mind up about which sport you would prefer to do. Then aproach a local shop for lessons and advice and go from there.

BTW. why do you think your windsurfing mates would infer that kiting is gay. It appears they may have an inferiority complex, have boosting envy, or maybe there just closet f@gs themselves

lol They never said it was gay, did you kiters all watch South Africa win the cricket or something because you seem a bit ****ty and defensive also highly strung. I'm not into cricket so there's no need do be all defensive.

I think after the advice I've been given on here I will definitely take up windsurfing, especially after watching some of the videos and reading some forums. Don't get me wrong your sport looks ok, you get big air however being a skater I like using a ramp to get air, I can go paragliding anytime so the hanging up there and flinging around my feet is what I find off putting. I think it looks better when you guys do an air and it's all in the same motion with no dangle time.

All I wanted was some good advice on here so I gave you some good advice back, I think my windsurfer mates were right in the way you seem very insecure about your sport though, they say you must have small genitalia because you're always wearing board shorts over your wetties lol

Any way cheerio girls

If you are in any way serious of making a choice, watch this movie first. If you think you're hard enough to do any of this stuff then give it a go.

what do you think you get kiteboarding in the ocean? do some more research on the stuff that the top guys are doing. From what I hear kiteboarding has an easier learning curve in the beginning but to get some of the wakestyle tricks down you need years of practice and big balls.

Kitesurfing is way more compact. You can put all of your gear in the boot of your car and be set up in 15mins ready to go.

Give both of them a try.
Instructors normally will supply the gears so you don't have to buy it for the start.
At the end of the day even if you go to pole surfing at least you have been holding a kite for an hour so your life is not completely wasted.

I wish in that video they'd cut out all the personalities of the pro kiters because they are tossers, anyway I don't like slow motion shots they have been ruining surfing movies for years. I did see some good tricks however there were a lot of lame hanging to long in the air doing monkey bar tricks stuff, now this is just my perspective and if you like it then cool I'm glad you enjoyed it.

The wave riding is what interested me the most, it did look good and a lot of fun, I wonder if that guy can surf with out a kite.

That sort of video wont convince me to start up kiteboarding because it's all wnk to me and I'd say the same about a surfing, windsurfing or skateboarding vid that was done the same. It was like a bunch of poser wake boarders done it or something.

I'd rather just see some local guys make a video that has some traveling, comedy, and kiteboarding in it.

No I was talking about what I'd like to see in a video, a video can have a bit of comedy as long as it's spontaneous and not set up.

Don't be so touchy you offend very easily, that video is a bit of a load of wnk at the start and at the end. I'm sorry that I didn't go into great detail about the comedy just thought you might be able to work out what I meant.

Sounds like you get angry easily and your ex girlfriend is a lot better off now.

kiters are a bunch of wankers, go windsurfing. way cheaper, easier and you can do it with friends if you want. you also don't have the risk of dying and stuff.
boards-1k kites near 2k, harness 2hunderd. lessons like 500. you will probably loose a board and rip a kite in your first year + you can never get away from the fact your being pulled by a kite. makes for a sport as free as ski biscuiting. also your back and other joins take a hammering. all the kiters i know have problems with knees and backs-it's an inevitable outcome.
