its about as good an idea as me going at a beehive with a can of spray and a ciggie lighter yesterday, ive got one day off work with a swollen face, but you should be able to get at least a couple of weeks with that innovation

Ok i relise how much power the kites have, iv also said about tying my HARNESS to the post not my legs or any other part of my body, with a short rope meaning if i was to come off the ground it wouldnt even be 1m, not 2 storys high.

And can anyone recommend a good beginners DVD?

Oh and whats a troll??

A better suggestion would be to attach the post to your safety leash. So when you get dragged the kite has a good chance of de-powering.
While many things could still go wrong, it's better than attaching your harness or foot to an anchor.

Where are you? (under a bridge??) Why can't a local give you few pointers at least, if you won't get lessons?

I cant believe this tried is still going and Bradlez has not taken the advice and drooped the idea yet.
Bradlez I do however have to admit doing this 10 years ago one winters day when I did not know any better and it was too windy to go kitesurfing. I did it on soft sand and tied 10 m of rope to some boulders the council kindly put on the beach at Pinnas. It was kind of fun, but I got slammed hard onto the ground and Im never going to try it again. I had seen a video of Lou Wainman and Elliot Leboe doing this over water on kite beach on about 50 meters of rope. I think the video was called "High". They were getting slammed lots as well, and they know how to fly kites. Take the advice and get a trainer kite to learn on.
If you do go ahead, you have to get someone to video it and post the results here so that we can all say "I told you so" and then laugh at your expense.

yeah king oath i knew it was a real sht idea but i was pissed off with them little black and gold buzzin bastards flying in me bedroom window stingin me cakes while i got the missus on the workbench so i went n dun it ennyway, the only thing i forgot to dun was record meself on top of a weak unstable stepladder with a flamethrower grinning whyle them beez were droppin out of mid air.

moral of the story, when you know your doing something fk stupid but just cant help it, get footage for the benefit of others at the very least

10m and 50m really is silly! does it say somewhere in my posts that im gunna use a long lenth of rope or something? or does it say not even 1m off the ground!
and it really wouldnt be worth videoing since if a do fall it wont be more than 1m off the ground! and plus ill struggle to get enough wind to get it in the air anyway!

yeah coz all people say is what people did and what they have done that is diffrent to what iv said i was askin advice about in the first place!! if u read through this whole post 1m goes to falling 10m,50m, a goal post, getting dragged the list goes on nothing really on what i was asking and how i said i was gunna do it! how hard would it b to rig up something to allow u to fly a big kite with the help of an ancor but still allow u 2 get the feel of how it flys! and where the windows are and stuff! like i said its not as windy where i am, not like the beach anyway!

You and me Brad are like two peas in a far out pod man...

We should totally go do this sometime, I learnt myself but I did it at a park in joondalup, The winds were more gusty there so I got to know how gusts work and I got launched really high and landed on the grass... its ok! The grass cushions your landing almost as much as sand or water do. I've got an old 14m Naish X3 you can have if you like, It's got a blown bladder but get a few bandaids and she'll be right.

why don't you tie your self directly to the post... like rope around your waist and all... then you will be 100% safe... no chance of taking off, or falling... this would give you 100% safety, yet you could still practice kite flying skillz...

By now you realize Brad that you'll never have any credibility on this forum unless you go ahead with this "dumb idea" (your words) and post photos and preferably video for us all, just to show that you know best. Good luck and do it in light winds.

And don't get upset with all the banter that goes on here, it's a tough crowd and even the best cop a caning from time to time.

The point is Brad, that no matter how short you make that anchor line, as soon as that kite powers up you're going to be off balance. You've moved the "pivot point" to an area behind you. Best case scenario, you get lift off your feet and knocked off balance. Worst, well, you get pounded. And you'll learn very little.
If you tied the harness is such a way that it can't move then, well, you're not going to learn anything that you couldn't learn with a $20 stunt kite. You need to be able to feel where the power kicks in.

There's a mass of collective knowledge on here and people get tired of beginners asking "ground breaking" questions over and over. Tethering's been tried before, it doesn't help for learning and can be bloody dangerous. If you try it, you're a fool.

p.s. If you want to see some real angst, ask if anyone's tried putting helium in the bladders before. Or post the Erik Eck video. Or ask what the best board leash is.

We have the latest contingent for the Darwin awards here. The fact that when you are powered up without being solidly attached to anything helps reduce the apparent on the kite seems to escape you.

If everyone is saying do it and get a video or alternatively don't be a f**king idiot then perhaps it should have entered into your head that it's a bad idea. Personally I vote that you go and try it, there are enough idiots in the world as it is, one less will certainly be a positive for the human race.

Know of a situation locally. a guy who got a 14 metre slingshot ? fuel i think for christmas , tied himslef to a bull bar behind his house in a park to learn.

FIXED POINT equals POTENTIAL rope broke , cleared fece , ambulance came ,, get real lessons , look at the big air section if you want to see how cool it can be. sport does not need bad press .
