I'm surprised Axis is happy with this bar. When contemplating kite purchase a year or two ago, the ride I had on the slingshot was ruined by a bad bar experience. The line would get jammed in the cleat. Pulling it down to activate it requirede enough force to take the load off the chicken loop. Combined with the pathetic donkey dick, it resulted in accidently unhooking about 1 k out to sea. While it wouldn't have been that much of a problem, the dodgy attachment of the safety to my harness snaped, I lost the kite and had a VERY long swim. After my previous joys with a Link, I just can't see myself going for anything made by slingshot again. (Not to suggest all SLingshots are bad - they clearly aren't or so many people wouldn't be riding them. I just can't see myself riding them again.)

Of the depowers I have used, the good ones have been North, Ozone and Eclipse - all above the bar
The bad have been Slingshot (below the bar) and Genetrix (above the bar but using two different bizarre strap systems which were hard to tell apart and seemed to jam all the time).
I won't even talk about some of the bad systems on my old C-kites from early last decade. Times have moved on, and boy am I glad about that

Surprised you weren't. It's horses for courses. Used this bar on '07 & '08 fuels no issues, and used the newer slingy bar on '09 & '10 fuels no issues. Can't comment in the donkey dick as the first thing I do is remove them when I get a new bar - don't believe in them. They are the bar equivalent of bridals!

I think the message is what ever you ride, understand how it works so you can get it to work for you. Otherwise change to something that works.

I laugh at how far some people need to bend over to pull their trim strap in.

My two cents worth. Most of my kites are North, and the above bar depower cleat is very easy to use, and easy to reach. I also have a Genetrix 14m Hydra for light winds, and the double strap depower was so bad, I removed it and fitted a North system! Works perfectly.

interesting discussion - I've ridden slingshot, cabs, core, ocean rodeo, and best kites over 4 years - for me the below the bar systems are wholly unsatisfactory and unworkable - cleats add complexity which is unnecessary and damage lines. The stock standard above the bar strap is my preference, grabbing the thing might require a momentry glance and millisecond reach but I've depowered many times in manic situations massivley overpowered and a long way out with no problem at all - it's simple, gives you heaps of leverage and just works every single time.

Love Brady's story about the slingy - exactly the same thing has happened to me.

Still - each to his/her own, read all this stuff and make you're own call.

The main advantage of a below the bar depower is that it means that you can have a longer throw on the bar for more bar travel. If there is a sudden much stronger gust you can just let the bar out further rather than having to pull the depower strap.
