Froth Goth said.. Hahaha the board progressi?ns funny
Was due to fitness or new location with smaller swell or just was over the performance shut and wanted to cruise ?

And yeah the gps tracking is real thats how all the paragliding stuff works all gps tracked and logged any given day your competeing against rest the world etc like the windsurfng speed runs
s

First down size was mainly due to a Californian knee boarder, (George Greenough), that was cutting circles around our best stand up surfers, Nat Young and Bob McTavish amongst them. This inspired the top shapers/surfers of the time to experiment with shorter boards. from 1967 onwards they progressively got shorter, by 1969 we'd gone from 9' to 6'.

I found there were a few waves, that a 6' board was just too small for, so I made a 7' mini mal, and had a 2 board quiver.
When I hit 70, my surfing fitness suffered from mainly wave sailing and not having enough surfing TOW, so I then made a very light 8' mini mal. Used this until approaching 80, this old body refused to jump up quick enough to handle late take offs. So I'm now back were I started on a 9' mal. But I've learnt a lot in the intervening years and this board is just as strong as the tripple 6oz glass jobs back in the day, but probably 3 times lighter.
(there's a blog on it's manufacture on here somewhere)
Still can't handle late take offs very well, I have to prone out and get to my feet if I can make it to the wall.
But I can pick up waves much earlier, so it doesn't happen as often.

So yes, a combination of conditions and fitness, and I'm guessing I'll get more used to just cruising.
Learning to nose ride again is now on the agenda.

watched a wide world of sports (I think) story on george greenough as a kid. How he used to fly first class on his amex with no shoes and tattered boardies and a t shirt. Go Juvenile great white fishing in SoCal on surf mats with handlines. And how he pioneered surf stuff and filming etc I must have had it taped on my made up windsurfing bits VHF. Why I remember so much. Cool guy.

(for the youngsters back in the day I was so starved for windsurfing content I used to sit through 5 hours of wide world of sports with the VHF on pause just to tape a small windsurf segment. they'd keep teasing at the ad breaks and then sometimes the show would run over and they wouldn't even play it! There was that and Freesail and sailboard extra at the newsagents every few months was all the windsurf stuff you could get. Now literally anything you can immerse yourself!

Anyway freesail and sailboard extra was more of a library arrangement. The were a few american and european mags too but they were stupid expensive and shxt.
So id read the freesail, commit to memory the images of jenna de rosnay to the bank. (there was also this ad for a roaster woolen shirt with a bird withoutstanding baps) Maybe a sneaky look at Sam fox in picture or people. techonoglia

I only check Seabreeze once a week since the new draconian rules came in, just to read all three new posts and make sure it's 'back on track'.

I just read what Philin wrote and thought - 'here we go'. Thanks Hilly, for putting Seabreeze 'back on track.

Anyway, I was thinking tonight how I used to love David Bowie - not in a homosexual, pork swording or rumpy pumpy way, but I thought he was super cool.

I was listening to his back catalog tonight and read an article that said he was a pedo. I've now come to the conclusion that I was conned.

David Bowie is a talentless clothes horse. He can't really sing and his music is just super ordinary pop dribble. All that was going for him was that one green eye, some film clips of aboriginals in the outback, some guy called major Tonk in outa space, a song he did with Queen and how he was dressed. Yawn.

Does anyone still listen to the pedo music he produced?

Do I really have to wait until Saturday for myscreenname's next witty and sometimes inspiriational post ?

So much going on in the world and so many other Seabreeze.com.au topics of the moment needing responses to.

Sorry myscreenname, but once a week posting limited to judging historic art in today's values just ain't gonna cut it for me. I tend to be out doing things at weekends anyways, rambling inane drivel on these forums is limited to work hours only for me. So, as a senior member of the commitee of user-moderators (or whatever it was called), I hereby formally request you to reconsider your actions.

I'm hearing you, but since these new forum rules and only a few posts a week from hardened jaded members I'm struggling.

Harrow FN and many other haters have left, they used to always nibble the bait.

I really was hoping there would have been far more David Bowie fans here to offend.

Listen, things are tough! The Aldi sparkling wine often gives me new inspiration, it's cheap. But I don't want to become an alcoholic.

These new seabreeze rules are tough. Way less gullible people browsing and they are harder to trigger, given the limited topics we can discuss.

Maybe it's a seasonal thing.

See, and there it is.

It is because you, at the fundamental level, are a leaner myscreenname, not a lifter. When the going gets tough only the weak stuggle first.

You don't see the powerhouse Seabreeze.com.au members needing somebody else to spoon feed them in order to post. You don't see FormulaNova only posting lame-ass topics when somebody else fluffs his pillow for him. You don't see the mighty Carantoc needing a double-act partner to prompt the next great punchline. You don't see Frothy needing spell-check to make sense.

No - the true winners of these forums can post no matter what. They can entertain, they can inform, they can inspire. They don't even need an audience. They are the true masters of the art.

Let me tell you a story myscreenname. A story that doesn't rely on the tired old adage of monkey traders and villagers, or three sons of rich money men.

In this story there was a spider. Just a little teeny tiny spider. An incy-wincy spider, And that spider climbed up a spout. It wasn't an easy climb. The spout wasn't lined in cotton-wool. The spout wasn't gilded in bitcoin. The spider climbed. It slipped and stretched and struggled but it kept going up that spout. And then - almost as if from nowhere, down came the rain and washed poor Incy out. So what did incy-wincy spider do ? Did he give up, complaining there was no-one to help him out. Moaning about the rain coming down. Blaming Greta and climate change ? No he didn't myscreenname, no he didn't. That incy-wincy spider just got right up, brushed himself off and climbed right back up that spout. He didn't need anyone to watch. He didn't need to prove anything to the audience. He just climbed.

Be incy-wincy myscreenname. Be that spider.

There's no connection between the two - Alfred's burnt cakes are from English folklore, while Incy Wincy is a children's rhyme. Maybe you're thinking of a playful retelling or parody that combined them? If so, I can guarantee, seabreeze.com.au would love to hear more about it!

You're thinking of the famous "spider story" often linked to Robert the Bruce, the Scottish king, not Alfred the Great or Bonnie Prince Charlie.

While hiding in a cave, Robert the Bruce watched a spider repeatedly trying to spin its web. Each time it failed, it tried again until it finally succeeded. Inspired by the spider, Bruce decided to keep fighting for Scotland's independence.

The spider story is a classic "try, try again" moral tale, much like Aesop's fables, so it's easy to attach it to other historical underdogs like myscreenname.

I dunno decrepit,

I am not sure Alfred the Great, Robert the Bruce or Bonnie Prince CharliX did what they did to 'become famous'.

For sure times were different back then. but I don't think they sought infamy in the manner society desires it today. I'd tend to view all three as having more influence on the world than leaving a couple pics of their arse on the Instagram archives for 15 minutes.

Much of what we now accept as the societal norm and as morally correct, including the principles of the western judicial and governmental systems were instigated by Alfred the Great.

Is it worth nothing how many figures in history ever got the title "the Great" ? It is a select list: Alfred King of Wessex, Emperor Constantine, and ... umm anyone else ?

Who in the modern era is ever likely to rise to such levels ? President Trump the Great (I doubt it), Kardashian the Great (probably not), myscreenname the Great (no way), Carantoc the Great (huuuummm, now you gotta admit it does have a certain ring to it).

There are plenty of 'The Great' people in history and even one ''The Magnificent' I guess that's why M.E.N.S.A. - which I am a member of - is such a select group.

No point having 'knob-cheese', 'riff-raff' telling the seabreeze.com.au community who should be remembered as 'The Great'. That would be 'misinformation'. It would be the same as mixing up Robert the Bruce with Wilbur the Pig

meh. Not so sure myscreenname.

Half that list are charlatans, self-proclaimed or were referred to as "the great' out of fear or politics, not out of broad-based respect and admiration. If that is the metric you'd include just about everyone who ever lived.

I was referring to people who earnt the title by contempories who weren't their promoters and deserved the title, not simply those who claimed the title.

If you run on that basis we'd have to accept it is indeed President Trump the Greatest, and clearly that isn't a reasonable methodology of assessment. It would be like having 'knob-cheese', 'riff-raff' telling the seabreeze.com.au community who should be remembered as 'The Great'. That would be 'misinformation'.

Maybe Alexander and Herod - but I'd also like to narrow the parameters down to exclude those who lived in pre-history, where the records become more like fables and religous texts than true historical records.

Catherine the Great is certainly referred by the title, but it was given to her long after her death by historians, not by those she ruled over.

Llywelyn might be a viable contender, I forget about that great celtic leader. Heralded as 'the great' by contempories in England I believe, so meets the criteria.

But Canute ? Show me anyone who called him Canute the Great, other than perhaps himself or his closest biased supporters and history writers trying to sell books in the modern era ?

Yeah, righty-oh MSN.

I am not well-read in all those on your list so I googled one at random.

Yury the Great sounded interesting. Is it this one you are referring to ?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yury_of_Moscow

Hmmmmmm. Doesn't sound like a 'great' to me. Not exactly sounding like a great unifier, peace bringer or deliverer of salvations to the many. An illegitimate prince who fought provincal battles for his own benefit and lost. His supporters later claimed he founded Moscow (seemingly his only achievement), which the archeological records shows is not true anyway. Who is calling him 'the Great" ?

I stand corrected.

Yury The Great is credited with founding Moscow. "the Great" isn't his standard title. It's likely a modern, informal exaggeration of his importance - not a historical designation.

However, Canute The Great, like Charlemagne or Alexander, earned his title through military conquest and political consolidation, not just bloodshed. His ability to rule kingdoms without fully dismantling their cultures - set him apart.
