Internet memes. Car talk in general. They do get a general bad wrap. Probably the 4wd system. Apparently it cuts out if it gets too hot in deep sand and forces you to wait a while for it to cool. We rented one as a work vehicle years ago working in the sandy country of the Vic/SA border. It was fine. Depends how far off road you want to go? This guy is like your little brother who turns up on his K Mart BMX whilst you and your mates are on your latest greatest carbon 29er and proceeds to ride you off the trails! He is incredible and fearlessly sticks his humble X-Trail where only us "big boys" with our over modded, lifted, turboed, bar worked, big wheeled, big tyred "proper" rigs would probably get stuck! Impressive and kudos.
